Thanks for sharing all your experiences. It seems much of the trouble discussed here is occurring during check-in on departing flights. This was the same experience for me departing Spain for Croatia with a layover in Frankfurt. We are hoping for a smooth flight and layover from Croatia to Serbia to JFK in NY next week.

    Our itinerary: MAD-FRA-ZAG; ZAG-BEG-JFK

Here are what we think are the important parts of our journey thus far (before reaching the US):
All of our check-ins could only be done in person. The Lufthansa check-in was the most strict, especially with Germany not being open to “tourism” as well as other non essential travel. We had everything from flights to emails from Croatia’s Ministry of Interior (Police). After showing this and explaining we are doing this to reach the US because of the 14 day travel restriction, the staff had to seal with another staff member and eventual call someone else to  “override the system.” Arriving in Frankfurt, everyone who was having a transfer flight (layover, transit, etc) went through a makeshift-looking boarder control check, and those with non-EU or schengen passports received a stamp. We mentioned we were going to Croatia to then enter the US. However, the officers appeared to only be concerned with our ability to properly enter our next stop, Croatia. Unlike lufthansa check-in, they didn’t ask for any emails of proof. At Croatia’s border, we mentioned we had paid reservations for a place to stay, and after the officer reviewed the booking confirmation, we were allowed to enter. We are counting our “14 days” on the day after arrival in the non-restricted country. We will stop counting on the day entering the US just to be extremely conservative. More anecdotal noise:
A number of us were being filtered through at check-in. One woman who had a copy of her marriage license had to insist with the Lufthansa staff member that she was allowed to check-in and fly because spouses are exempt to the travel restrictions. We believe the staff eventually gave her the ticket but she had to explain it a little gusto. Our flights offered seats to be picked with one seat between each passenger but when we boarded this must have changed since our tickets were ordered as everyone was packed into every seat possible. Croatia is currently allowing EU citizens and residents to enter if they can show proof of Croatian property, or even hotel, stay, house/boat rental, etc. booked and paid for. A big thank you to those who shared with us your experiences including but not limited to:

Thank you very much, will have a look at it! Thankfully my hotel is comprised of a restaurant and a bar so I do not really need to order food online   Food and drinks onsite, good to go!

I can't believe I am saying this but I am in Mexico City!

From beginning to end, overall went quite smooth.

As I had checked in the day before, I just had to drop my suitcase at the luggage drop-off in Paris (CDG). I was asked where I was going to fly and chatted a little bit because I had an excess bagage and the computer was not cooperating. Other than that, first step from Paris was super smooth. Everyone was super nice to me and Air France took care of the travel from Paris to Amsterdam, although we flew with a KLM plane.

Once in Amsterdam, border police checked my passport and I had to go through another security check for cabin luggage. After that, I waited for my plane to Mexico in Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. Some of the shops were closed but many of them were open. I was able to buy some food and good to go! I carefully followed other VJ members journey with KLM so I made sure to bring a bottle that I filled with water before boarding (only 1 bottle was available for the whole flight to Mexico so I definitely needed it!). We we offered a bag full of snacks and a hot meal for the whole trip. First time I ever flew with KLM and I was pleasantly surprised. It seems like they are doing their best to balance with satisfying customers needs and comply with COVID-19 safety measures. I took some pictures of the "travel" for those looking for some reassurance!

KLM crew then distributed 2 forms (health form and Mexican immigration form) by asking passengers "Mexican?". I did not understand at first as I was distracted, but then confirmed I was not so I was handed over 2 forms instead of 1. Some people did not understand either and by consequence, some of them had to fill in the form once at the Mexican immigration. They had queued but then had to wait again before passing the border. If you want to gain some time once at the Mexican immigration, make sure you have those 2 forms in hand. The immigration officer asked the purpose of my stay in Mexico, how long for, and the place where I was going to stay. I first said I was going to self-quarantine for 2 weeks and they then asked me the "complete" reason. I then told them that I was going to self-quarantine for 2 weeks at my hotel and then fly to the US. They stamped my passport, my Mexican immigration form and let me go. That was it, quite fast.

As someone here posted that Uber drivers are not allowed to pick up at the same place as taxis, I asked someone where I should go for Uber. If you plan to go to your airbnb/hotel etc. by Uber, you will have to go to Puerta 7 (Gate 7).
Also, to reassure my fiancé and my family, and just to be on the safe side, I shared my Uber trip with them so they could follow it live. In the Uber app, you just need to click on "share status" and choose the contacts you want to share the trip with!

I feel safe and I am not really worried about the rising number of cases given that I do not plan on visiting the city and just chill at my hotel and order food online. I feel very lucky and grateful that Mexico allowed me in, therefore I am willing to participate in the ongoing fight against the virus by avoiding unnecessary travels. At the same time, I also hope I will be able to come back to Mexico in the near future, in better circumstances.

I did not sleep in the flight to avoid being jet-lagged, quite tired now but I am not going to complain. I haven't seen my fiancé since last December and I just can't wait for these 14 days to be over. There's eventually a light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck and safe travels if you choose the same route!

PS: I wanted to thank everyone who shared their experience so far from now as it helped me get better mentally prepared to do this journey by myself. I will be forever thankful to you, thank you so much.

Awesome, glad to hear it went smooth for you. Mexico City has Uber eats too for food delivery and Cornershop app for delivering food from Walmart and Costco.

To give more reassurance to all y'all:
I just got off the phone with CBP and they assured me that staying in a non-banned country for 14 days will get you access to the US. Also, the POE does not matter. So I'm relieved I can carefree fly to Orlando

Hi everyone! I made it to Mexico safely. The journey was all in all not a bad experience, of course you have to wear a mask on the plane, and there are more screenings than usual-however, I was lucky enough to get 4 seats all to myself, and everyone else on the plane seemed to have a lot of space, too. My flight from Frankfurt to Mexico City was with Lufthansa, the board service was pretty much standard - drinks, food and so on. I was positively surprised.. we landed 45 mins early. Everyone had their temperature taken at arrivals. Customs was empty, I told them that I was going to stay in Mexico to quarantine. The guy wasn’t happy, he asked for my ticket to the US, which I gladly showed him. He then asked, why I was going to travel from Cancun to the US and why I was going to Cancun. I said that I was told that there are less corona cases and that the embassy told me, it would be fine to go to Cancun. He said, there are loads of cases everywhere. I said, well if it is a problem, I can also just stay in Mexico City. He asked me, why I wanted to go to the USA (I saw that he had already seen myK1 Visa in my passport). I said that I am going to get married to an American. He didn’t say anything. After what felt like a tiny eternity, I asked well, can I go then? And he just moved his hand (like go). So I took my and made a run for it. Either way, I am still not 100% sure If I want to go to Cancun, I saw there are tropical storms and a bunch of thunderstorms in Cancun. It’s the wet season. If someone who is already there could let me know, I would be very grateful! Unfortunately my travel buddy texted me yesterday, she is too scared to go so I would travel by myself. Thanks for any advice!! So far everyone has been extremely friendly here in Mexico City and the hotel is very nice. Pool is closed tho, and the streets are pretty empty.

The headline is misleading. The key item to remember is that asymptomatic carriers are different that pre-symptomatic carriers.

Asymptomatic carrier means they had the infection but never showed symptoms, and passed it on to somebody else.
Pre-symptomatic carrier means they had the infection and passed it on to somebody else before they showed symptoms.
This article relates to the former.

    The takeaway?
    1) Contact tracing is effective. Heavy asymptomatic transmission is nearly impossible to contact trace. Symptomatic transmission (pre or post symptom) can be traced.
    2) The likelihood of a significant percentage of the population having already been infected (and therefore are possibly now immune) is low. Most people who get the infection do actually show some symptoms at some point (even if mild).

It does not mean the lockdowns were excessive (that's another topic still).

Just a quick reminder that without masks and lockdowns the disease would have probably spread many, many times faster.

Would anyone be comfortable gambling with other people's lives just because they don't know 100% how the virus works? If the medical community says, "stay home" and "wear a mask" out of precaution, the fact remains that caution never hurt anyone. In fact, it might have saved many lives, and prevented healthcare from collapsing in many places.
