If the beneficiary intends to change her (or his, but that's far less common) name as part of marriage, it's best to get a social security number before marriage so your name matches what's in their systems.

That's basically why most guides here recommend getting an SSN before getting married.

Ok so that is what got me confused lol. In my case the beneficiary is the man and the petitioner is the woman. Does it still apply?

He should apply for an SSN because lots of paperwork (banks, insurance companies, and more) either requires an SSN or requires convincing people than an SSN isn't required. It's less urgent if he doesn't intend to change his name after marriage (if he does, you definitely want to get an SSN before marriage), but if you don't get an SSN before the 90 days from POE are up, you can't until you get EAD. What you should do is

    1. Get an SSN
    2. Get married (within 90 days of POE)
    3. File for AOS (adjustment of status / conditional 2-year green card) and EAD (employment authorization document; lets beneficiary work before green card) and AP (advance parole; lets beneficiary travel outside the US before green card); do this as soon as you have your marriage certificate. EAD/AP normally takes 4-6 months; AOS normally takes 12-16 months. If you file for all at the same time, EAD & AP have no additional cost to file.
    4. Two years after getting conditional green card, beneficiary applies for removal of conditions and gets a ten-year green card
    5. Three years after getting conditional green card, beneficiary can apply for naturalization (citizenship) if they want to (and you're still married, of course).

Please can you explain the name change thing you mentioned up there? I do not understand what you meant.

Sorry for being so quiet guys, since POE, it's just been all things wedding! POE in Dallas was super easy, especially doing POE on a Sunday!

I tried going for the SSN 2 days later, thought I'd chance my luck but I94 hadn't registered yet, so I will be going tomorrow morning which should be the 10th working day!

But now stateside and all things wedding are going well, 16 days until the big day, hope everyone else's journey is going well?

@UKUSABoston  Hope your fiance's interview goes well!

I didnt know you could get ssn 10 days after POE.

Yes multiple ppl in your family under the same petition would have the same NVC case number.

Ie You plus any children you had would be:

    XXX1234567890 01 (you)

    XXX1234567890 02 (child #1)

    XXX1234567890 03 (child #2)

You would all have the same base NVC# because your petitioner would have filed for you jointly on the same K1 petition but the 01, 02, 03 would designate each individual person in your foreign family.

I understand now. Thank you. medical on tuesday Whew!

Ooh! It's similar to my Embassy.

You schedule Interview, print out Appointment Letter, attend your Medicals two weeks to your Interview Date with a copy of the Appointment Letter...the two weeks is to give them time to process the results and we pick the results from them. The Clinic must ask you for it.

Packet 3 is a List of Instructions, just the ones you saw on the website. I know many Applicants that attended their Interview without the Packet 3 from the Embassy. For me, I was at the Bank to pay the Visa Fees, when the Embassy's Packet Email came in on my phone.

Ok this is very insightful. I am here stressing over p3 because @CI rolling said if we dont receive p3 they wont interview us. sigh

    @ElieSon... @jean baptiste

I contacted my Embassy via email, requesting the packet to be sent to me (including my wac # and case #). I got an auto-response within minutes and after 2 days, they specifically replied my email with the Packet. I would advise, you wait.

how many days after did you receive your p3? so my case showed ready on the 25th and on the 27th it shows case was last updated. I am just estimating when they will receive my physical file so they can send my p3. Our interview is on the 8th

Thank you God bless you @Greenbaum  @Naeswas tell me am sharing what I don't know.

If you choose finacee as your relative you are I soup I guess because they are trying to know if you are trying to get married to your brother or sister for you to come to the state.

According to the definition your relative is your brothers and sisters living abroad.

Your finacee is not your relative.....so none is the answer.

in the options, it said your fiance is part of your relative. It is clearly stated there

    Hello Everyone,

I am so excited. I received my case & invoice numbers today. However, I am clueless as to what the next step should be.

I am currently in Nigeria at the moment visiting my fiance. Is there something I should be doing while I am here.

We are both praying that my fiance gets an interview date before I return to the States.

What can I do at this point to get the ball rolling fast?

    Pls help...🙏🙏🙏🙏

you can start getting your police report ready. fill out the ds-160. NVC delays the process
