Pomodoro reacted to Paulo-Ayen in Applying for SSN before Marriage and AOS for K1
Better get the SSN before marriage. I've read it somewhere here that they had a problem getting the SSN after marriage I am not quite sure about the details but I think because what they have with them was all K1 Visa which means that the visa is not for married but for a fiancé or something like that. Maybe someone here know better and can help you out better.

I suggest doing so as soon as possible (including before marriage and AOS). It's not a dealbreaker if you do it later or miss your window to do so (within 76 days of entry), but having an SSN sooner does make thing simpler with things like a driver's license/state ID, joint accounts, insurance, etc.

Once married, if there is a name change from the marriage and it's still within those first 76 days from POE, they can request a new card in the updated name. People have had mixed results getting the SSA to issue a card in the new name before an EAD or green card is issued in the new name (took my wife 3 visits...), but it's something. People have had issues getting the SSA to issue any card after marriage (even in their maiden name), although it is technically incorrect for them to do so.

It was a very pleasant experience. You will need for sure the Military Certificate and they never asked for the military card but not all the cases are the same.

Hello Rani, my fiance had an expired military card so he went ahead and got a current Military Certificate to make sure we had everything we needed. It did not take long for him to get the certificate. There is not much information about this topic so you may try using the expired one if you can't get a new one. Good luck!

I will like to make an update on this topic. Only a current Military Certificate (with translation)  was required. This document was returned at the end of the interview in Algeria.

I cannot begin to imagine how overwhelming all of it is.......leaving your home and family and friends and everything familiar....but that is what my Algerian fiance  (now husband) did. He knew when he entered the US that it would be at least 6 months before he could leave and prepared everyone for it. He speaks to his family and/or friends every day via skype/whatsapp/viber.......it has helped immensely with the home sickness. ..

Hello to all VJ family members.  As most of you know I am in the Philippines right now enjoying time with my better half.

Anyway......., Yesterday, or well I should say the 27th in the Philippines was my Fiancees birthday. This is the first time we have been able to be together for a birthday, so we wanted to really celebrate with a nice dinner and some wine. After getting ready and waiting for a Grab (Uber) if your not sure what grab is, my email notification went off on my phone. So looking for something to do I checked my email, and the email I received was from USCIS,  it said there was a case status change. I quickly grabbed my laptop, logged in, and WOW!!!! It said our case was Approved on the 26th!! Honestly I couldn't think of a more perfect way to get an approval notice! Almost like a storybook notice. We are together, it's her birthday, we were all dressed up and leaving to celebrate. Needless to say we now had two reasons, and of course we over celebrated, if that's such a thing. he he

Just wanted to let everyone know and thanks for all the support. I'm glad I could help in the past with scans and answering questions and will continue to help in the future.

Pomodoro reacted to janet3 in I recently received NOA2, and I am so frustrated that I sometimes want to quit. (Algeria)
I realize this process is long and stressful....and I truly feel your pain  (my fiance...now husband on a K1 visa...is from Algeria).
I am going to give you the best piece of advice I can give....just breathe....yes, the bureaucracy sucks (both in the US and in Algeria). All of this moves at a snails pace. I agree, the whole of Algeria shuts down for Ramadan....and even if it is not Ramadan, businesses have no set hours and will take a break randomly. It is what it is.
What saved me through all of this is.....this forum. The people here are lifesavers....seek out people who have went before you....make friends...stay in contact with the people who have similar timelines....I am more than happy to help or guide or whatever you need  (even if you just want to vent).
As for the logistics....you will need to send the I 134 and last year's transcript. He will need to get the criminal record and birth certificate  (both have a 3 month expiration date). The certificate of non marriage is by far the most difficult piece of paper work to get  (because he must take two witnesses....that are not related to him...)
As for the military record they will absolutely ask for it (as @Ben&Zian said) If he has requested it....he needs to actually go there and request it often....R (my husband) had to renew his driver's license....it took 9 months  (for a laminated piece of paper...and he had to go back 5 times). Life is different there  (as I am sure you are well aware). But, you are not alone. I will support you whenever I can....please feel free to message me....

During the interview my fiance was asked for his military information. My fiance was exempt from service...
However, even though he was exempt, he was still asked for documentation  (and translation). I do not know what information would be required if your fiance served in the military...
Please update this thread after your interview

for intent question : nothing has to be too detailed.

Chose "intend" and in the additional page put "N/A (K1 Visa Process For Permanent Residence)"

This is the old form style but the most questions are same check this out:

Just FYI, you can go ahead and fill out the DS-160, you do not need an NVC #, only your USCIS number. Make sure to print/save the confirmation page as you will take that to your interview as part of your packet.
