JasVW19 reacted to Dashinka in Upcoming Travel – Different Last Names on German & U.S. Passports
Good point. There are several countries where a person does not retain their previous citizenship when gaining a new citizenship. I know with my wife, she has to enter Russia on her Russian passport. Sometimes Russian immigration officers request her U.S. passport, but that varies.

This makes sense, of course you cannot travel on German passport since you're no longer a citizen. OP is a dual citizen and their travel will be different.
Also, with introduction of ETIAS, whenever it is enforced, travelling on EU passport would mean you don't have to fill forms and pay fees.

To avoid questioning at the border when entering Germany?
I'm not familiar with German laws, but most of countries require their citizens to enter on proper passport of their nationality, not foreign.

So you don't enter Germany as a German citizen?

You need to book your ticket with your us passport and show the us passport at the airport and at customs in Germany-so,no need to worry about the maiden name in your German passport😉

I would not enter Germany as a US citizen. I would enter as a German citizen using the German passport.

Relatively common, my wife does it all the time. When she was on a GC, travel was booked using her Russian passport, and the GC was used for entering the US. Now with a US passport, travel is booked with that name and she leaves and re-enters the US with that passport only using the Russian passport for entering and leaving Russia, and booking any domestic Russian flights. She always keeps a copy of our marriage certificate with her, but in 10+ years, not a single person in any country has asked to see it.
I do agree with @OldUser, if you can change the name on the German passport relatively easily, I would do that. In Russia it is a real pain as it involves needing a court document showing the name change (marriage certificates won't always work), then the national ID (domestic passport) has to be changed prior to changing the name on the external/international passport. It takes on average many weeks for the change on the domestic passport and has to be done in country. Add to that, many things such as property ownership, bank accounts, retirement, etc. are tied to the name on the domestic passport, and all those things have to be changed manually. Gotta love bureaucracy.
Good Luck!

Consider updating German passport with married name. Otherwise advice above is good. Carrying certified copy of marriage certificate while names don't match can be helpful.

Book travel in passport name. You must use the US passport to enter and leave the country. I would book in US passport name. Carry original proof of name change

Use US passport when leaving or entering US. Use German passport when entering or leaving German customs/immigration.

Yes, but you'll need a Covid test: https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/en/einreiseundaufenthalt/coronavirus "must carry proof that they have been tested for infection with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with them upon entry and present it to the competent authorities upon request and, if necessary, to the transport company prior to travelling."
Yes, but you'll also need another Covid test: https://www.cdc.gov/quarantine/fr-proof-negative-test.html "proof of a negative COVID-19 test or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 for all air passengers arriving from a foreign country to the US."
Here is more info: https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/u-s-visa-and-travel-faqs/
If you travel, please follow the steps below:
Do not attempt to check in for your flight online if you have an ESTA registration. Arrive early for your flight. Carry as many original documents as you have available that you believe demonstrate why you have been excepted from a travel restriction, such as a Permanent Resident Card (commonly known as a Green Card), a marriage certificate, or a birth certificate. We are unable to provide guidance about your documents or whether copies will be considered sufficient as such questions are a matter for CBP when you travel. You may also wish to carry a printed copy of the Presidential Proclamation itself. Your status will be reviewed in consultation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials. Please note that smaller airports may not have CBP officials on site. If applicable in your case, your ESTA will be reinstated in order to allow you to board. -

I asked the same question to another gentleman in this group, his took 18 days to be approved from the day they received the RFE at CSC. My RFE got delivered and they updated the app the same day confirming the receipt. I dont think they looked at the documents I sent in the original packet either. A lot of documents they requested were included in my original packet. One thing they wanted and I did not send was Driver's license for both of us with same address on it so I had to go get a new driver's license (I had not updated mine since we bought the house). They also wanted tax returns filed for 2018 (kinda hard to include that in the first packet since we filed in 2018). I am hoping they do mine in 18 days or less :)

Took five days over a month. They got our RFE May 15th, and our case was approved June 20th.
Edit: This was the Potomac Service Center FYI, we'd been transferred there earlier in the year.

Yes, I did. And they received it on Monday (status was updated both in the app and online).
I am not sure about sending in the address change with the RFE. Maybe someone else here has any good insights on this?
