I agree with @EmilyW, it is best for your friend to join and clarify their situation. What visa was your friend’s mother looking for, F2B, F3, etc.? How old is your friend, and have they aged out? When was the I130 approved for the mother? Those are just some of the pertinent questions that need answering.

Take option one with a copy of your most recent return along with W2’s/1099’s and transcripts for the previous two filings.
