jordan85 got a reaction from ceeq in Question - certified copy of the marriage certificate - Los Angeles [merged threads]
I've seen so many threads with Los Angeles couples stressing about the long wait for their certified copy of their marriage certificate. I went through AOS back in 2013 and sent USCIS the souvenir/non-certified marriage certificate that you get at your wedding. They accepted it. No RFEs, no problems, no need to wait for the certified copy.

I think you need to cut the OP some slack. People make mistakes, who are we to judge other people's situations? They now know the results of the mistake, and were just asking if there were any other similar situations. Its really upsetting to read when people have concerns, the VJ brigade comes out to shame and humiliate instead of showing some empathy. Yes there are laws, yes they did not adhere, but what more should they do to rectify? Repent to the immigration gods?

You're overthinking things! Right now, the court knows nothing about your immigration status. They just got your name and address from the DMV. Once you fill in their form and put 1 or 2 years (or whatever) and say you're Canadian, they don't know much more. They'll have no reason to be suspicious about anything and won't be reporting anything to anyone. Don't worry about it and just finish the form and be done with it.

jordan85 got a reaction from KASH2011 in N-400 July 2016 Filers
Has anyone else heard of the big wait times / cases being stuck with these new IOE case numbers?
Apparently, N-400 applicants who used the new form (posted online in April, I believe) are given an IOE case number instead of an NBC number. N-400 applicants who submit the old form get a NBC case number.
It seems that although the form has been used by applicants since April, no-one has received an interview date yet or have their case status "in line for interviewing". Meanwhile, NBC numbers (ie the applicants who submitted the old form) seem to be processed very fast.
It seems that IOE folks' cases aren't moving past biometrics while NBC folks' cases speed ahead!
USCIS web site says that from 10/1, the old forms will not be accepted. Hopefully they stick to this deadline (they've already extended it once before).
More discussion here: http://mail.trackitt.com/usa-discussion-forums/n400/1655760285/reciept-number-starting-with-ioe/page/5 and in the April filers thread.
This makes me so depressed, like there's going to be a very, very long wait! If I'd known, I would've used the old form... But how was I to know!
I hope things get moving... Some encouraging words from other VJers would really help me right now lol

Any other couples applying for naturalization yet? My 90-day window just opened up and I sent off my application as soon as I was eligible to apply.

You cannot satisfy the legal presence document requirements to get a regular California driver's license until you get your EAD or green card. You could get an AB60 driver's license without a legal presence document though.

If you have it, I'd ring a couple of other things, just to be on the safe side. For example I brought our checkbook (has both our names on), and a bill for some furniture recently purchased with both our names on. The interviewer made copies of both.
The only thing thye seem to be sticklers for is that if you have joint kids, be sure to bring the birth cert with both parents mentioned. The lady before me on interview day was sent home cause she didn't have it.

jordan85 got a reaction from hafsol in Birthright citizenship and the general public
Wow... You'd think the hospital staff would know about it, but I guess they don't have much to do with citizenship... Once you get the birth certificate, you're all good to go.
Despite all it's controversy, birthright citizenship is one thing I love about America. Its a country of immigrants and birthright citizenship gives a clear, simple rule. My home country abandoned it decades back, and it's created a huge mess for young people trying to do something as simple as a passport application.

Photocopies!! Always send copies of those type of documents, keep the originals safe at home.
I'm doing ROC right now too and sent copies of everything, no originals.
Good luck, from a fellow Aussie!

jordan85 reacted to JohnR! in "Obama Modifies Oath of Allegiance for New Americans, Removes Pledge to Defend the USA"
I agree that most people in our country are Christian, but as a nation we were born and remain a secular country. I think the 'so help me god' belongs in the oath as much as 'so help me Santa Claus' or 'so help me golden Elves', or any variation depending on the flavor of superstitious belief of the individual taking the oath.

jordan85 reacted to Boiler in Is it really not necessary to explain our case anywhere?
What relevance does this have to anything but your personal curiosity?
Answer the questions asked, they asked you on entry the purpose of your visit, no need to ask it again.

jordan85 got a reaction from Darnell in Intereresting Case
This is the most important part, I think..
"Further, the applicant has admitted that he did not inform the inspection agent of his intent to marry his spouse because he feared he would be denied entry. Testimony of the Applicant, July 17. 2009; Statement of the Applicant. dated September 12, 2009"
So he already had the intent to marry his fiancé during this visit, and didn't disclose this on entry to the US because he knew it would arouse suspicion of immigrant intent. Clear and simple, he lied, and later stated his lie was to evade immigration laws. Entered with a nonimmigrant visa with immigrant intent (by applying for AOS).
