That's always been one of my main pet peeves with USCIS. You never know when the times might  lengthen, or shorten. With utterly no transparency in the process, it's very hard to work out where applicants stand.  At any time, they could start moving again, or slow down further, there is really no way to tell. I'm very glad of one thing, once this circus is over, I never have to deal with them again. 

That's one of the reasons I'm doing this now. No telling if it will get worse in the future - I'm prepared for a wait, I understand it's a big deal we're asking for. Most people outside this process have no clue what it's taken just to get this far. Let's hope for some movement in Memphis soon - I'm far, far, far on the Eastern side of the state otherwise I might have popped in to see what's what..

I'm no expert but since you have no other replies I'll give it a shot.

1. I arrived at the end of October (in 2012) and still filed - we had a CPA do our taxes because my husband had businesses and was already using one. I don't remember the detail of that first filing other than we filed MFS. My part of the filing barely impacted but at least I was in the system. 

2. I'm not sure what you're asking here - you mean you didn't work for a year in the UK before coming to the US? IRS won't be interested in anything prior to arriving in the US. You have until 4/15/2017 to file your 2016 tax forms. Since you were in the US on January 1st 2016 it will be a straight year's file for you both, regardless of whether or not you are working.

3. The wire transfer - is there not a category for gifts? If not, I would put it under income but either way you will definitely need to report it to IRS.

4. The things I supply in our tax filing are:

• W2 (you won't have one if you're not working)
• bank statements from UK bank (checking and savings)
• FBAR for UK bank
• mortgage statement on UK house (the interest is a deductible)
• P60 and payslips for Teacher Pension in UK

If you don't have any of those things then you won't need to provide much. We still use a CPA because of the foreign banking element. We changed to a new one who had experience in foreign income because our last one didn't know about the FBAR which worried me sick. We are working toward filing our own taxes and saving the $500 pa but we're not there yet.

Health insurance. We take my husband's company plan. You know you will pay the penalty - I think the first fine is the smallest. It seems to aggregate year on year. This may be all about to change so if you're ready to pay the fine, that will buy you a year to see what happens next.

Sorry to hear that, I hope they both make a fast recovery! We just had my husband's son stay for a week from Colorado. I tested him and hubby on civics.... both US citizens... both failed...

I've just read this [merged] thread from beginning to end. I understand why you're posting in VJ, immigration is a frustrating, costly business and can be full of tense moments and nervous queries - and that's when things are straight forward! It seems that you are in a situation for the first time with a girl who has been here before. Perhaps your girlfriend should be the one posting the questions? Either way, I would agree with comments like this:

... Like somebody else said, chances are good that she will leave you as soon as she gets her green card. Obviously, she will tell you that she is not looking for papers. Nobody will admit it if they are looking only for papers.

However, you're not helping yourself here. You keep starting new threads (despite being asked not to); asking the same questions in different ways [and in broken English] without showing any sign that you have taken previous advice on board. You keep asking, will there be problems? No one knows if there will be problems for you because everyone's experience is their own and you have barely started yet. But it is frustrating to watch someone embark on an unsecured journey and have questions about security, have people offer sound advice and then hear you say "My send papers 3 days ago"

Each of your posts expresses worry. You ask questions. You don't listen to answers. If you only want to hear what you want to hear then you're in the wrong place. If you want genuine advice and support, then be prepared to engage with the person offering it. Otherwise you are destined to walk a long and [probably expensive] path.

At every step, we always took the 'overkill' position on what to include. We are now at the naturalization stage and (although a lot of time and money has gone into this journey) it has been a very straight forward procedure. Always read the instructions on the USCIS website carefully. Read others' examples of what they included for evidence and always keep in mind:

• what is it USCIS want you to prove?
• how might you go about proving that?
• what relevant documentation will support that?

Hi there,

I submitted my N-400 last month and waiting for Bio interview on Monday. My husband and I have done each stage ourselves and never used an attorney. If you read the instructions carefully from the USCIS website you will see that it is a straight forward process. VJ is a great support forum if you have questions. Personally, I think it's an unnecessary expense to have someone do something we can do ourselves but it's your choice.

Did you get a receipt notice yet? My understanding is that if the application is incomplete, they will send it back (could be wrong) but if they send a receipt they have accepted your application for processing. In your situation, I would collect all the extra documents you think you should have included in case you get an opportunity to present them at interview. I'm sure someone who knows more will come along soon.

Just received e-mail that I was scheduled for FP today. No text. Waiting on the letter to find out exactly when.

Me too, received an email notification yesterday but will have to wait for the letter to see the date. It's a 4 hour round trip for us and we were in that city just last weekend but these things are small prices to pay to get to the end of the immigration process, right?

Hi everyone! Back briefly after another long break. Congratulations to everyone with new green cards, and sorry to hear that things didn't wind up as you'd hoped, KTandTommy: all the best as you sort everything out.

I'm happy to report that Elena Noelle arrived with minimal fuss in early December, and could actually be the cutest baby in the history of babies.

Approved!! Finally got the notification that the green card was approved on December 31. Got message today it's been mailed. Skipped interview entirely, so it's worth the wait. For those still waiting, what was bizarre, is I got the text notification of a case status update on December 31, and when i checked the USCIS case status, it said it was approved December 4. Then about 2 hours later I got another text message that the case status was updated, and the date was changed to December 31. I think it got stuck on someone's desk while they went on vacation.

No... things aren't going so well here. It's a long story and a lot of drama, but I think I've reached the breaking point. I think I've just had enough

KT I'm so sorry to hear that I don't know if it's something that can be worked out or even if you guys want to try - I know how exhausting it can be mentally when things aren't working. I also have divorce behind me so I understand the breaking too.

Congrats! What an exciting time for you

I got my card on Monday...such a great feeling to put paperwork behind us for a while! Our next step now...we've both quit our jobs in DC...moving back home to Knoxville at the end of the month...going to Scotland in December for 5 months to have some quality family time and rest and seek what we are meant to do with our lives! Jason is feeling called into ministry so it will be perfect to have time to think

WOW Sarah, that's huge!! We got home to Knoxville last night after a 2 week trip which included my son's wedding in the UK. I got to use my green card for the first time in Chicago - it meant we came through immigration together (which was fun) and the fastest it's ever been. We'll have to meet up when you land in Knoxville

Did anyone receive an email saying "Card Production' and then one saying 'Decision'?! I'm guessing since it's gone to card production...the decision is approval!!!

I got that exactly! Got card production on 4th, decision on 5th, green card arrived on 11th You're ok

You will get a new update with a tracking number on your USCIS webpage - I got mine on the day before delivery - so I'd be looking at getting your letter on 19th, your tracking number 20th and green card on 21st - although that's a Saturday
