No problem. I'm glad she was approved. I've read about other VJers not getting approved but I'm not sure why since we're all newcomers.
After about 5 months they raised the limit to $750 and then to $2,250. The APR is high and late fees expensive but the point is to use the card to build your credit, which is what I've done.
    Good luck!

Free_Dom reacted to pushbrk in Wife Filed tax 2011 as Single, is there impact on Visa issuance
Filing as Single and then later amending the return once the spouse arrives and has an SS# is a common, though technically improper practice in circumstances like yours. It's what I and many of us did. I've never seen a tax consequence for doing so. As long as the Foreigner is aware of both the reason for using this filing status and that the couple will amend the return later, I see no immigration consequence either.
Any of the other filing status choices require filing by mail instead of electronically.

I gotta say I was laughing at the "king of the house" phrase as well. I find it funny that some of the best chefs in the world are men, but how ridiculous since cooking is a woman's job, isn't it?! *Sarcasm* At home, my husband and I share the duties, just like Austramerican has mentioned. There isn't any chore that is just mine or just my husband's, everything is shared even snow shoveling, which some people leave for the men to do. When he cooks, I do the dishes, and when I cook he does the dishes, and so forth. My father is also an excellent cook, his mother always taught all of her sons to cook and do their own things. She did this because she wanted them to be able to take care of themselves; "You never know who you're going to end up with" she used to say.
Anyway, in relation to the OP, I don't know what's going on with him and his wife. There are always 3 sides of a story, so hopefully he'll come back and give us an update. Granted, I don't think the wife is right in limiting his food but there must a reason for her doing it.

Free_Dom reacted to Austramerican in Is anybody else's spouse like this?
I'm not married yet, but I lived with Ben for a year before he had to go back to Australia for us to file the K-1. I LIKE cooking so I did a lot of the cooking, I grew up not exactly well off and I was always taught never to waste food also. I had 4 siblings so basically when I learned how to cook it was for many people, though I was never FORCED to learn how to cook, I just enjoy it.
BTW, for all the "man is the king of the house" and "cooking and cleaning is womens work" types, my dad is man enough to make the money AND cook and clean, he cooked most of the time in our house growing up! HE wanted to because he enjoys it, my mom and him shared the duties and he was never ashamed or scoffed at it as women's work because thats what a REAL man does! It's supposed to be a partnership, and while in my house I don't expect my man to cook and clean if I am the housewife (which I won't be til we have kids), he is man enough to do the laundry, dishes and take out the trash when we were living together, and I didn't even ask him to, he just wants to because we are a team and support each other.
He's even taking it upon himself to learn how to cook meals because he appreciates all the delicious meals I made for him and wants to return the favor <3 And thats the way it should be, if he acted like Mr King of his castle all the time and just took it for granted that cooking was my job it would take all the joy out of cooking and quite frankly he would have to make his own meals But fortunately we are a team as it should be!
Your house can be how you like as long as you are both happy, but that's not to say that everyone should live like you.
As far as this guy, that sucks. She is not being fair. However, having a serious sit down talk with her about how it makes you feel and how you feel it is unacceptable is a lot better to do than holding it all inside until you explode. Also asking her what prompts this behavior and that you feel it is hurting the marriage is a convo that totally needs to happen asap. Obviously you married her for a reason, its time to man up and have a conversation as husband and wife, but more importantly, as adults. Not talking or just mentioning it passively is not going to help, you need to have a straight up one on one convo, both of you are married to each other so there should be some mutual respect between you, and love. Ideally if she understands how important to you it is and if you can understand that she can't change asap (she needs to be willing to compromise at least) then you two can be on the road to healing. Good luck.

I order on eBay a lot and just came across this game for Nintendo. I used to have one when I was a kid and loved playing with it. Eventually it broke and my parents probably threw it out, gave it to someone, or I don't know. I sure would love to have one of those games today. Check out these listings - you may want to check if you still have any of them laying around somewhere.
    Excitebike - $2,500
Dragon Warrior III (Nintendo NES) - $4,999.99
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters - $5,500.00
    Soccer VGA GRADED - $25,000.00

I'd say you're lucky that you were born in Canada and not Iraq. Sorry that you're not hearing what you want to hear, but the truth is very simple: you have the option to go back to your home country and start living your real life. Everything you have here can be taken away any minute, but you can avoid this from happening. I've never been to Canada but I have an uncle that has been living there for 20+ years and he loves it. Honestly, you should look into getting the proper Canadian identification and start applying for universities. Like others have said, you do have a bright future, stop living in the dark and make something of your life.

Like Darnell said, check with the DMV. It varies from state to state. In my case, I had to take both the road test and the written test to get my Illinois DL, despite the fact that I showed them my Nicaraguan DL (heck, I'm used to driving stick!). So, check and see, but in worst case scenario, you'll have to take both tests.

Honestly, I think that has nothing to do with this. My husband is the USC, and he took one look at the forms and said he couldn't do it. I was the one asking questions here on VJ, reading the guidelines, following up with our case, etc. And I'm from Nicaragua, yeah a third-world country, a poor country, I guess you wouldn't expect a Nicaraguan to even speak English. It comes down to each person's ability to comprehend the instructions, fill out whatever is needed, and gather the paperwork that needs to be filed.

    +1
I applied for numerous jobs at the beginning of the year and only a few of them requested references. When they did, I included 3 professional references that worked with me in Nicaragua, one of them was actually my supervisor. So, if they request references, I would suggest to include professional references from your previous job(s) in your home country Nowadays, the internet makes it easy to communicate - include their e-mails.
    Good luck!

You can register the baby at any Nicaraguan consulate. I think there's one in New York. Not sure if you speak Spanish but maybe your husband can take a look:
    http://oaip.cancilleria.gob.ni/index.php/es/servicios/94-inscripciones
For babies born outside of Nicaragua, you will need to submit the following documents to the Nicaraguan consulate closest to you:
    1. Birth certificate
    2. Photo ID of the the Nicaraguan parent
    3. Marriage certificate of the parents (if married)
There's a note in that website that says that if you do it within the year of the baby's birth, there will be no charges for the registration.
This is the info of the Nicaraguan consulates:

"Hopefully" is not a good plan for defending one's self or family. Just as the kid in that story find himself in a "position" to have to take action, many times it is others that put us in a "position" without our consent that cause us to have to defend against an immediate attack.
It is unfortunate you see causing bodily harm to a person who is intent on cause you bodily harm as "revenge." At that moment of the attack it is called self defense, long after the attack has occured it is revenge.
I'm not trying to change your attitude about self defense or violence, but turning the other cheek or walking away is not always an available option.

Unnecessarily? Really? The boy saved his sister's life and his own by acting promptly. The intruders had already robbed two other houses in the neighborhood. I genuinely hope you're never in a similar situation, because judging from your posts it seems you would let something happen to your family before taking matters into your own hands.

Good post. I thought these two, above, were interesting. Both use the word "liberal" and both imply by that word a truer, more elemental concept that the limited, one-dimensional and often derogatory modern definition of 'liberal' in vogue today.
Liberalism, to both Washington and Cronkite, evokes notions of freedom and unshackling of prior constraints. A 'liberal', after all, is one who cherishes his liberties. It's etymologically derived from the Latin root of the word 'liberty' i.e. freedom. Washington stresses the civic nature of liberalism: the participatory aspect of a citizen free to take part in his nation's affairs. Cronkite stresses the freedom to seek truth, to use the senses and intellect of a free man in choosing his path and opinions. Both are different dimensions of liberty and hence liberalism. Both are freedoms enshrined in the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
To all who sneer at 'libs' as some misguided naive fools ready to bankrupt their souls and their nation, I suggest liberating your mind. How is it that Liberty is a word of virtue in American political discourse but liberalism is so often a taunt? In fact, the two go hand in hand.

I guess I can see people getting mad over this because of the whole illegal immigration problems. I'm from Nicaragua and I grew up singing both the Nicaraguan & U.S. National Anthems because I went to a private "American" school my entire life (in Managua). Nothing wrong with learning the American culture and singing the anthem of a country that is not mine for as long as I can remember, right? In this case, these kids are only taking one class or two for electives, I really doubt they're being brainwashed. I also took 5 levels of French at the Alliance Francaise in Nicaragua and we learned (or tried - I can't remember a word) France's National Anthem.
In regards to learning about Mexico and not any other country, well, you can't hide the fact that the grand majority of Hispanics in the U.S. are from Mexico or have Mexican roots. I, personally, dislike being referred to as a "Mexican", but then again I feel I can't blame them since it's probably the first time they're meeting somebody from Nicaragua.
Talking about Spanish, I totally dislike the way Mexicans speak it.
