Getting IR1 visa on new passport

Hi,

Last week I had my medical appointment and my (hopefully) final visa interview is next week. I had to go to the US embassy after the medical for a "document review", where they sealed all my documents (except my passport) in a transparent folder and told me to bring this with my passport to the interview.

My current passport is expiring in 8 months and I'm wondering if I can get a new passport now before the interview and have them put the visa in the new one, since it'll have a different passport number than I used in the entire application process.

Thank you

My spouse is going back home for good - do I need to report it?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, as I swore I read it years ago, but I want to double check.

I used to be on here a lot 14 or so years ago, as my UK husband was going to move here to the US to marry me. He did, and we were happy. But his drinking, which I thought was cultural at first, started to get heavier. He's been a full blown alcoholic the last years, and has never put serious effort into helping himself or fixing the underlying causes. As with most alcoholics, he's snowballed and gotten way worse over time. Things have happened recently that have made it clear I have to leave before he destroys my life anymore, and I'm starting a divorce soon.

Ironically, his greencard expires in February, 2026, and would need to be renewed in August. We didn't go for citizenship due to DUIs he collected in recent years. Yes, he's in bad shape.

The greencard is NOT being renewed, and he'll be going home by the start of next year after several matters are settled. From what I've read in the past, I don't need to tell the USCIS that he's leaving, he just leaves. Is this correct? I want to be sure not for his benefit, but for mine.

Expedite Request Approved - Now what?

Good afternoon all,

I have been DQ'd since 16th April this year, long story very short I was able to file an expedite request on urgent business grounds and this has since been approved by the NVC and then subsequently the US Embassy in London. I was notified on 25th June that my application has been fully transferred to the London Embassy and my case status on CEAC as of the 27th June now shows as "Ready" (there now also appears to be an 01-04 on there which I assume is my wife and childrens applications).

Now, the question I have, has anyone else done this before, or does anyone have any indications of how long from this point might it take for an expedite request to be processed to an IL?

KR

My partner and I are getting married in October and will file for an adjustment of status soon after. I am due to fly back with him in December for Christmas with my family. Can I travel to and from the US on my J-1 visa or do I need to apply for an i-130? If so, how long does this take? Thank you in advance!

Issue with SSN? Unable to be added to spouse bank account and credit card.

Hi all,

Facing a rather frustrating issue with my SSN, here's a timeline:

  • Arrived in Jan
  • Applied for SSN early Feb
  • Married mid Feb
  • By March first SSN never arrived, arranged replacement that arrived by the end of March.
  • Tried to get added to husbands bank account but lady at bank said it came back "unverified". Told me to speak to SSA to get them to "activate" my SSN. Called SSA same day and explained situation, was told that SSNs aren't activated, they are valid upon being generated and issued. Left it there for a while.
  • Tried to update name on SSN but had a problem with lack of docs. Returned once I had my EAD card and it was updated.
  • Received updated SSN early June.

I'm already an authorized user on my husband's credit card (did this before updating my name so only provided my contact info) but we're trying to upgrade my access on the account. I put in my SSN, but it keeps saying it can't be verified. We also want to try the bank again, but it's a 1.5 hour round trip to the bank and we feel we might face the same issue.

Anyone else experienced this? Is there something I need to do with my SSN? Im going to start looking for work soon so I have to be able to either open an account of my own or be added to my husbands.

Any help or advice is appreciated!
