I got married in California in June 2024 to my husband who is a US Citizen. On the day of the wedding, I didn't change my last name to my husband's last name as I was about to apply for my marriage green card and I didn't know if having a different last name would complicate the forms when applying. Therefore the section labelled new name on the certificate is blank. I applied for my GC and got it in Nov 2024. It is set to expire in Nov 2026, when I believe I will renew it to the 10-year GC.

I want to change my last name to my husband's last name but worrying about the order to do things as I don't want to impact my GC renewal. I called SSA and they said I can change my name even though I didn't opt to on the day of the wedding. So I have an appointment scheduled with them in early June. Any advice on this process?

Much easier to change name when you naturalise

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
