TL;DR: Will I be able to immediately perform work as a self-employed person after I enter the US on a IR-1 visa, working for a non-US contractor? I'm likely receiving my IR-1 visa by the end of the month and my wife and I are looking to move to the US soon afterwards. I think I understand that if you want to work for a US-based employer, you need to have a green card, the application of which can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months if I understood it correctly. In my case, I will not have a US-based employer, I will be self-employed, doing contracting work for a non-US company.

There are a number of threads on the topic of health insurance, but I couldn't find one that exactly matches our situation. My wife (US citizen) and I live and work in the Netherlands, and as such we are insured here. Our plan is to move to the US in December 2021 or January 2022, depending on the exact date of the IR-1 visa approval. I've contacted my health insurance in the Netherlands, and it turns out I will lose coverage as soon as I no longer live in the Netherlands (e.g. from the date that I de-register with the city, which, at the latest, coincides with the termination of our rental contract). In order to avoid a "gap" in our health insurance coverage, we will need to make sure our US-based insurance starts on the day that our Dutch health insurance stops. Since my wife does not yet have a job in the US, she does not have health coverage there that we could add me to. And as far as I understand it, one can only apply for insurance on the market place if you already live in the US, and also only on specific dates (e.g. the end of the year). The question is: how do I avoid a gap in my insurance coverage?

Hello VisaJourney! I am the beneficiary of a spousal visa, and we're currently at the NVC stage (not yet documentarily qualified but hopefully soon). I want to change jobs to one that is better paying... is that OK to do at NVC stage!? Will we need to re-do any of the paperwork or does that put our case in a problematic state!? Thank you!!!

Good afternoon, My now wife came over on her K-1 visa back on early July, we ended up getting married in late August. We are now filing the AOS paperwork and had a few questions regarding the payment. I understand that the I-485 is $1,140 and Biometrics is $85 bringing the total to $1,225. We are also wanted to file for her employment with the I-765 and her ability to travel with the I-131. We are planning on submitting all of these documents together. When using the fee calculator on USCIS website (https://www.uscis.gov/feecalculator), when I look at the I-765 it shows an option where you pay $0 and an option where you pay $410. Which would I be using if I were to file altogether? I am also seeing something similar with the I-131. The question that changes the outcome is "Did you pay the I-485 required application fee?" if I mark Yes, it shows I need to pay $0. If I mark no, it shows I need to pay $575. If I were to file all of these documents together, would I need to pay $1,225 for it all? Or $1,225 + $410 + $575 = $2,210. If I do pay the full amount of $2,210 - do I just include one check for the full amount or would I have 3 separate checks, 1 for each document? Thank you! Stephen
