Extension letter expiring, expiring Canadian passport - is a new passport necessary?

Hi all,

My wife and I filed for I-751 in March of 2019. It's being processed at the Nebraska Service Center. The last update was in March of 2020, saying that the case is ready to be scheduled for an interview.

Back in September, with the 18-month extension letter close to expiration, we traveled to the USCIS office in Milwaukee for my wife to get a stamp in her Canadian passport as advised by many.

However, my wife's Canadian passport expires in March. The people at USCIS told my wife that before the date of expiration in March, she needs to go back to USCIS with a new Canadian passport and get a new stamp.

My question is, is this necessary? From everything I've read, you are legal until your I-751 case is decided. My wife has a steady job and we do not plan on traveling out of the country until she is a citizen. The process to get a new Canadian passport (she took my last name so she can't just renew, it needs to be a brand new one with her new name) is lengthy and expensive, and my fear is that we will get an interview for her I-751 case before her passport even arrives, and we'll have wasted money for nothing. My wife is terrified of having an expired passport and worried that she will be deported, especially if she arrives for her I-751 interview with an expired passport, but my understanding is that USCIS wouldn't care about her Canadian passport at her interview - she's there to extend her permanent residence here, not in Canada.

My wife is literally losing sleep over this so any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Edit: I noticed my signature below is very out of date. Haven't logged into here in years!

AILA - Vision for Biden-Harris Admin

I wanted to share this social media toolkit released by the AILA (American Immigration Lawyers Association) that anyone can use to help amplify the messages and voices at the AILA and their recommendations for improvements to the US Immigration system from their recently published "A Vision for America as a Welcoming Nation: AILA Recommendations for the Future of Immigration".

This process is (or has been) painful for most of us, and advancing the messages of the AILA feels like a small thing I can do to help pass the time and support the betterment of this process.

My husband (usc) has filed the i130s for myself and my daughter (his step daughter). They ve been approved and we re at the NVC stage.

Since she will be under the age of 18 when we move, does she automatically get citizenship when we move?

Pros/Cons of getting US Citizenship as a Canadian?

Wasn't sure if I should post this in the citizenship forum, as I wanted to hear thoughts from a Canadian perspective.

I've been in the US with a green card (post K1 visa) since late 2012. I've thought about trying for US citizenship but do know it comes with getting taxed double if I were to move out of the country someday. Not sure if this applies to Canada with trade agreements or not. But with the immigration hub-bub over the last few years and the rollercoaster that is 2020, I feel a bit insecure with just the card. It's up for renewal in a few years and I'm always scared of losing it when we travel. For those that became naturalized or know someone that have been, are there any regrets that come with becoming a citizen of the US? How do you handle travel out of country (assuming you don't legally give up canadian citizenship since the US has to renounce your original citizenship)? Anything else that's good to know/consider? Thanks!

I-864 Joint Sponsor Household Size questions

I'm not fully understanding what household size is referring to. If I do go with a joint sponsor, what does the household size pertain too?

Is it only dependents the sponsor has (So any children, him, and me?), or is it anyone living under the same roof as him?

And would a girlfriend count under that, or only a fiance/spouse?

Thanks in advance!
