Citizenship/Minor child

Long story short. I am Canadian. I moved to the USA with my infant son about 13 years ago now. I am trying to figure out the right way of doing this. Our Green Cards will expire next year. I was old 2 different things and led to believe the 1 was my ONLY choice for years.

1. I need to become a US citizen before my son turns 17 or if failure to do so I will force him at 18 to refile for status (seemed crazy and drove me nuts thinking people would be put in this situation)

2. Until he is 21 he is considered a Minor and I can actually just renew our Green cards for another 10 years and then he can then decide as an adult his path he would like to take.

Please help me make sure I do the right thing!

Hey guys, I was approved at my K1 interview last week & have already received my passport back with my visa in it!

I plan on going over in May, I was just wondering since I check on the timelines & they re kind of confusing me.

What is the average timeline for all steps of the AOS process at the moment all the way up until green card if approved?

Experiences with border crossing into Canada during COVID restrictions

Hello all,

I wanted to start a separate thread on this topic rather than keep adding to the long one for easier reference.

As most of us know, the situation with border crossing has been difficult and restrictions can change, so please refer to the government site for the most up to date rules: https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid

I wanted to share our experience with having my USC husband come visit via land border.

My husband had recovered from COVID in January, so he has proof of a positive test that falls within the 14-90 day range. On March 4, he drove up here via the Peace Bridge and it also happened to be the day they implemented land border testing at that port.

The guard was polite, but also admitted he was new and didn't really know the rules for exemptions from testing, so while he did allow my husband to enter, he still handed him two test kits and directed him to a parking area to wait in the car for someone from Public Health to come speak with him. He waited...1.5 later he finally flagged down another border guard and asked what's going on and they said just to stay put and they knew he was there.

Finally, someone got to him after 2 hours of waiting in a dead parking lot and went through his quarantine plan. They accepted his previous test results and then took back the test kits, as they wouldn't be necessary this time, and then they actually phoned me to confirm I understood the risks of having him stay with me and ensure that I gave my consent. Once that was done, they let him go.

So if you're crossing by land right now, be aware that it's a bureaucratic, unorganized mess and the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Ensure that you give yourself more than adequate time and get that pee break out of the way before you reach the border. You may be there a while.

That said, he's here now and may you all be able to travel to be with your families smoothly and safely.

Montreal Consulate update - what is considered immediate relative family members?

I see Montreal Consulate updated their processing status March 2nd on their website stating they are now processing immediate relative family members including fiance visas.

We are F31 (married adult children of a US citizen)

We along with fiance visas were banned under proclamation 10014 until it was recently lifted. Before this they were only processing young children of US citizens. But now they've changed how they worded it for family.

What counts as immediate relative family members? Its my husband who is the son of a US citizen. Do you think we would be included in that general statement of "immediate relatives"? I wish they would list the visa types they are processing. It's always clear as mud.

We had an interview appointment booked last year in March but it was canceled 5 days before due to the pandemic and then proclamation 10014. I am hoping this means we are now back on the list to be rescheduled for our interview. We've waited 15 yrs now and got so close before it all stopped. Hoping we can begin moving forward again soon.

My fianc (USA) and I (Canadian) are planning to file a k1 visa. I used to go to school in the US and stayed a year for work under an F1 Visa. During that time I received a SSN. What happens when I go to the US under the F1 visa? Is my SSN still valid or is there anything I need to file?

Thank you
