I got an email today saying my visa interview will be on April 7th. My fianc in the US has yet to file her 2020 tax returns (we can do it in the next couple of days) so I am not sure if the scheduled interview date is too soon. We want to use her 2020 tax returns as she well exceeds the 125% poverty limit but her 2019 tax returns barely make it. Should I send an email to my embassy asking for a later interview date? I read another post saying it would take roughly 2-3 weeks for my fianc to get her IRS transcript which might be too late. Or if I keep the date, should I file the 2020 tax return ASAP and just bring the 1040 + all W2's for the 2020 year?

My I-485 was approved last week and card was mailed yesterday. I was thinking that SSN would come automatically because I recall checking box to request this, but now I'm realizing that was on the I-765, not the I-485. So, is it correct that I have to apply to SSA for an SSN? Also, it looks like offices are still closed (since March 2020). I'm a little wary of mailing green card, birth certificate, passport, etc. to SSA in order to get SSN. Have others done this? Thanks for your advice! And sorry if this is in the wrong place, couldn't find my answer elsewhere.

I moved perm to the US in August. And only made income in Canada for all of 2020 (well until I moved of course). Since I can't work here yet. What happens if I file jointly in the US with my Husband? Do I get double taxed? He is very adament about filing jointly and not separate. We are going to H&R Block to get it done, who seem to think they know what they're doing, but idk what's going to happen. Should I just file married but separately in Canada? Or is this way fine? I don't know a thing about when it comes to taxes, I always had a family friend/account to do them for me in Canada.

Hi guys, I got stuck in the US during covid and ended up adjusting status in Aug 2020. I have been here since March 2020. I talked to my CPA and since I m from a NAFTA treaty country I can use tiebreakers to determine residencies. As determined by his fancy tools, I m a resident of Canada (I worked there remotely, all my investments and bank accounts are there and I have my house there still that my parents live in). I never intended on moving here when I did and got stuck here. Based on the NAFTA treaty you are able to claim residency in one country and use tiebreakers to determine non residency in the other country so I will be a non resident of the US. You can cite the part of the treaty and fill out some other form to explain your reasoning. I will be using a CPA to file all this. What I m worried about is if USCIS will care when they see that I filed as a non resident on my 2020 US taxes during our interview this year while I was adjusting my status. I do plan on filing jointly though and filing as a resident in 2021.

Hello, I am a Canadian applicant for a K1 Visa. My fiancee is in WA, and we filed our I-129 back in early February of 2020. We received our NOA2 Notice of Approval , Dated May 22nd 2020. Since then, we have received no communication from the NVC, or the Embassy in Montreal. There were a few concerns about this, as we never received any notice from the NVC that our case was received, and that a case file was created for us. 1) I am noticing on this website's timelines, people are entering Case receiving dates from the NVC. We never received any welcome package or any other communication from the NVC. In fact, the only way we know they have it is that I called them several times and got our case number and invoice number. They then told me that they don't send out welcome packages or confirmations anymore, and that the only communication we should expect is the letter from the Embassy (the next stage in the workflow). Is this normal for other people during the process, or was this what other people experienced during Covid 19 slowdowns? 2) Our case says "at the NVC" when I check its status on CEAC. Am I supposed to create the DS-160 or will I get prompted to do so later? 3) Does anyone have any idea what the processing timeline is for NOA2s dated in late May 2020? I have tried contacting the embassy several times, and we only get an automated message instructing us of the COVID slowdown and backlog. My fiancee and I are panicking that we missed something and it will screw our entire application. We have already been waiting a year and don't want to have to wait another year.
