The Notary Public at work told me that she or any other notaries was not allowed to notarize the copy of my passport. Is she right? If so, how can get it notarized?

It does not need to be, the only thing notarized that we provided to the consulate was the I-134 form.

I was in Guangzhou for the visa interview so I gave my fiancee my passport to take into the interview.

It might be a state regulation. Every state has its own notary laws.

These regulations do vary by state but if they can attest to anything being a true copy, they can attest to a photocopy of a passport being a true photocopy.

Why would you want to notarize a copy of the passport, may I ask?

Why would you want to notarize a copy of the passport, may I ask?

I know..I was actually wondering myself

I couldn't be in China for the interview, so my wife had a notarized true copy of each page of my passport as evidence of my visits to China.

My insurance agent often notarizes the picture and any visa pages applicable to a given trip so people can carry separate from their actual passport, as an aid in replacing the passport, if needed.

By notarizing your documents you technically are providing "originals" and therefore eliminate the need to have originals later. Not that you shouldn't take them with you at any rate.

I would think in most cases your pictures could prove you have been there. But then agian I was in Nigeria and that is definately not like California. A notery should be able to state that something is an exact copy of a document.

Pictures count as only secondary evidence, and are not proof alone that you've been somewhere. With Photoshop it's easy enough these days to paste yourself right next to anyone you care to be with. :)

Still don't understand why notorize in the first place? Please stun me with a valid reason for that. May I be pointed to the rule, regulation, document, or requirement for a notorized copy of a passport anywhere in this process? (sneaking suspicion that more unnecessary ####### is being submitted to USCIS to further clog up the paper path).

Setting phasers on stun... :D

I think the responders in the thread summed it up pretty nicely. There doesn't seem to be any requirement for a notarized copy of your passport. But some petitioners have used it to strengthen their evidence. I don't think anyone really knows if it really does strengthen their evidence or not. In any case, it's only a paperwork burden on the filer.

I didn't have any passports notarized. I just copied the thing and sent it in.

Our copier, here at work, has a warning on it that it is against national law to copy certain things.....passports, checks, and licenses are included in that. I laugh every time I think how many times I have copied all of those. Now, the money, stocks, bonds............those I get. The others, not so much.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
