BTW.......this history lesson all started cause someone mentioned dividing the US and I suggested if someone says something like that then we did not learn from the Civil War. I don't really care where this history lesson was taught or not. Before someone says something like this, they need to read up on this exact event occuring in history.

It's not a bash on what country taught what.....of course a lot of that is country specific.

I wasn't bashing on you with this. It's a long drawn out story that would be better told if you just read up on it. That's really all I meant. Suffice to say, from the history standpoint, it's not a good idea.

Bruce Catton's The Civil War is an excellent, readable account of the war. But the short form is this: prior to the Civil War, the states were a lot more autonomous, hence why some of the Southern States decided that they could secede rather than put up with the North. Afterwards, it became accepted that it was actually one nation, and that secession wasn't a viable option.

This country is a much better place today than it was in 1960.

Yup. It's not easy to run a diverse society, but it seems to kick ### pretty well. Pat's also playing fast and loose with history with his numbers. In 1960, people still saw the society as diverse -- there were all these Catholics running around, and everyone knows that real Americans are Protestants. Seriously, it was a worry that Kennedy wasn't American enough to be President. Earlier newspaper articles decry good Protestant America being degraded by all these Papist Irish and Italians. So it's a little revisionist to paint America as this 90% unified culture. At the time, they didn't see themselves as 90% unified.

What's changed? People assimilated a little and society changed with it, but not in a bad way. I was reading something a couple weeks ago -- was it here? -- an old baseball color piece that lauded Joe Dimaggio as really American! No, really! He's not just an Italian hero.... He's really American He prefers Chinese food to spaghetti!

Anyone here still think that spaghetti is a scary ethnic dish, the eating of which indicates that someone isn't really American?

In Croatia you only barely touch US history in the 4 grade high school, you start having history from 5 grade elementary school (out of 8) but mostly European, and Croatian respectively.

I never had any sort of US history, but I would think that the US Civil War would be big enough event for people to at least know the basics off, no?

On 11/5/1605 Guy Fawlkes was hired by a group of Catholic terrorists (disgruntled noblemen who were persecuted for practicing their faith, following the Reformation) to blow up King James I and his court with a cache of gunpowder stockpiled beneath the old houses of parliament.

The character appears in that movie V for Vendetta, but there the character of Fawkes was presented as some sort of consciencious idealist, rather than a mercenary who was simply hired to be the "trigger man" by the real idealists.

Out of curiosity how does the Croation education system handle the issue of the Bosnian war? With it being so recent - I assume they have to address it somehow.
