Guys,

Maybe I'm worry about nothing but, When I filled my wifes I-130 I gave her my family name along with her complete name. Her 1-NOA arrived with my family name. I asked her to get her passport changed to add my family name. She told me that the passport office in Cali Colombia told her that her passport was too new to get changed??

Now I worry what will happen when I send a photo copy to the NVC and at the Embassy in Bogota, when they see my family name is not on her passport.

Anyone had this problem?

Thanks

i dont know if this is help but in my country when the woman marry she take the husband last name. Therefore the woman have all the right to AMMEND all her documents ID's if necessary using the husband last name.

So maybe you can ammend her pasport instead of telling the people to change or renew her passport.

just a thought..

i cant understand why the passport office was saying that it was too early to change name it does not matter, once u re married and u have marriage cert, with yah, u can change it anytime and it is free, then they will punch a hole on the previous one and stamp cancel on it, my wife got her first US passport in june with her last name b4 we marry and she change it to my last name again in september when she was coming for visit, and there was no problem, she just sent in the previous one and the certified copy of our marriage cert. that was just it, but if u want to expedite it u will have pay around $73.00

This was the passport office in Colombia. If I read your post correctly you are talking about the USA passport system.

Anyway I'm starting to worry about this as the US Embassy in Bogota says that your documents must match your passport. I plan to send her back to the Colombian passport office with her older brother, maybe he can talk some logic to them

What is you wife's current legal name? The answer is critically important.

My thai wife and i are waiting for the interview for her CR-1 visa to America next month. She has just taken my last name and got a new passport. Will this create any problems with our visa interview? All of the paper work from I-130 to DS230 were completed before we changed her name. What docs or forms do i need to obtain?

Thanks

I did all of my wife's paperwork using her new surname (my surname). Her passport had her previous surname. She went to the interview, showed them our marriage certificate, and there was no problem. She received her CR-1 visa.

 Is your spouse american or from a different country? When I got married I changed my last name through the social security office and then changed the passaport to match my name. Even though my previous passport with my maiden name was like a year old. I dont think timing matters unless she is from a different country and they have laws and regulations. I would say you should speak to them to clarify the reason behind why she is not able to change her passport with her current name. I did mine right after I changed it in the Social Security Administration. Im kind of worried to cause my last name in german is Schäfer but in the US I have Schaefer since it is pronounced that way and then I had my maiden last name. So three different last names. But I included that in my I-130 for my husband. Hopefully that is not the reason for the hold up in CSC.

I think doodas is right. You don't have to worry about it. Have the marriage certificate with you that's all.

If possible change the last name in the passport so she can get the visa and greencard with your name as her lastname. Otherwise, she can change it here in the US. No worries.

Yes we are filling exactly as you guys are doing it, we got married but I haven't changed any of my documents here in colombia to match my husband's last name I kept my I.D and passport as they were and so far it hasn't been a problem at all .

In all the forms we have filed for the immigration process my name shows like I have his last name but in the rest of my colombian documents I still have the name I have before i got married .

Good luck with everything

The journey is over we are divorced now.

Hey Thanks,

Estrella went to the Colombian passport office again today. They told her there was NO WAY to put my family name on her Colombian passport unless she changed her (cedula) this is the Colombian national ID card. So we will move forward with her passport saying her Colombian name and all the papers I've filled with the USCIS showing her having my family name added to her name. So now she will have 3 last names, mothers, fathers and mine. I guess if there is any problem it will show up at the NVC when I send them a copy of her passport ID page.

Again Thanks to all of you.

Hi mate,

I dont know how much time does it take in Colombia to get the name changed in a passport.. Your wife will need to send the Docs when she sends DS-230 ...And i think you just have got the NOA2..... and this all process is still 3 to 5 months away... as cases are goign real slow.. so if the colombia people issue the passport fast liek within 15 days.. then you dont have to worry.. tell your wife to wait for 4 months.. and when the NVC system says that they have sent you the DS-230 ... she can go and get the name changed.... till that time.. you will get the DS-230 which will have to be signed by her and filled and she will get the passport with changed name...

I hope you understood my idea. It all depends on the time the colombia people take to change the name in the passport... lot of co ordination will take place in here...

I hope this works....

there is nothing to worry .there is col.in form D.S.230 which requires your wife to fill any other name she can fill second name there but visa will be issued as per her passport name
