Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

ME - English, Russian, French, some Dutch

WIFE - English, Russian, German

My Dutch is horrible, my wife's German is horrible. Obviously her Russian is much better than mine, but we can both hold a conversation, read and write (with obviously more effort on my part).

I have given up on learning any other languages - improving the ones I already know is my goal now (and the same for my wife)

Me

English (native)

Spanish: I teach it, so good enough for that. I went to South America and learned not nearly as good as I thought :) Also, good enough to have conversations with my friends when I don't want my kids to understand (except son is taking Spanish now...dammit)

French: not so much anymore, but I still remember the skit I had to learn for 12th grade

German: am learning now

P

German (native)

English (completely fluent)

French (conversational)

My son (who is 16) puts me to shame: English (native), French (conversational), German (near fluency), and is learning Spanish now

I am a language geek and have studied at some point in my life, to varying degrees, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Latin, Modern Greek, Russian, Tibetan, Japanese, Nepali and Hawaiian.

Currently I would say my language knowledge is:

Fluent: English(USC), Hawaiian Creole English aka pidgin - you know da kine????

Near fluent: Italian(lived in Venice for 2 years), Venessian(Venice dialect)

Conversational but rusty: French, German, Spanish

Very basic: Nepali(but my hubby is helping me with that) (L)

Smattering of words and phrases: Hawaiian(and related Polynesian languages like Samoan and Tahitian), Japanese, Tibetan

Can read alphabet only: Modern Greek, Russian

Hubby knows Nepali, English(conversational) and Hindi

If you are a language nerd like me I highly recommend the site phrasebase.com - it has message boards for every language you can imagine.

Well, I feel inferior with all of these polygots here! It is important for me though to know what I know deeply and well, rather than know a smattering of phrases in various languages, if that makes sense.

Me: English (native); Spanish (near native fluency); and a bit of Yucatec Maya.

Hubby: Spanish (native); Maya (native); English (conversational and learning more every day); and Cape Verdean creole (seems to pick up more phrases in Creole than in English!)
