Signatur size limit

Hi,

I've run into a strange problem: my signature is getting too long. While I understand that there's a limit - and for a good reason - I would like to know precisely what that limit is and why is the signature size limited (e.g. is it because it restricts the number of picture posted, is it because it takes server capasity, is it some unescapable flaw built into the SMF forum, which I assume this one is based on, etc.)?

I think that the main reason for a limit is to make sure that signatures don't take up too much physical room and I do think that that is probably necessary on these forums. However I'm running into that limit by simply posting my whole minimalistic timeline on it and linking to two sites. Is there any way this limit could be increased (as it's clear that I won't abuse it)? I don't really think that timeline code could take up much loading capasity anyhow.

(And yes, I do know that there is the option of filling your timeline elsewhere too, but that option is imprecise. I personally get quite a lot of PM's based on my - and other's - timelines because I currently am the main upkeeper of two IR-1/CR-1 timeline lists that track where everyone is going in their visa processes.)

Personally I would rather see a useful outline of someone's entire visa journey than a dozen freakin' pictures and/or banners in their signature to scroll past. I don't know why there is such a limit on something like that yet allow the other.

I actually think that the limit is based on marks. I use up my limit since I have three long URL's on my signature. Two of them are pictures of flags and the third one is the link to James' shortcuts. I could gain more space by using tinyurls for example, but I really wouldn't like to get into it (it would also slightly add to signature loading times). I would rather get a larger number of marks to use up . It might be a good idea to put up a request system or equal, since some people do (in my opinnion) abuse the signature by putting multiple gigantic pictures on it for instance.

I think they started the timeline entries to replace the signatures because of sizing issues.

included in the size is all the different fonts etc, a person might use in their signature....

I actually checked and I think the limit is 1,500 marks or there abouts. I could easily shorten my own signature with 200 marks by just employing tiny url scemes, but I'm still not sure if I want to go into it.

I personally think it would be smarter to put a maximum visual size to the signature than having a maximum mark size on it. Then again I do know that this is ten times harder to implement than the current system and I already feel sorry for poor Ewok and all the code he needs to take care off ...

It is difficult to check the screen size of things without javascript. We simply check characters long: 1500 max I think.

You can take out the "touches" they are not nessesary when doing the timeline. It would atleast help. i took away alot of my timeline. i felt the only thing nessesary at this time was after the visa was handed to Edi. If someone wants to see my FULL timeline, theres a lil link for that to the left not far under my name.

I would rather see the immigration info in a signature than photos.... after all VJ does have a gallery for photos.... and they are of no help to anyone, where as a visa timeline in their signature is helpful... I dont have to go look see if they have filled in there timeline if I am trying to answer their question...
