I'm once again here asking if anyone has suggestions or advice regarding an SSN not behaving...

Long story short, I have had my SSN updated from maiden to married name and trying to do the usual things like get put on husband's bank account and as an joint user on a credit card. Had problems with both coming back saying invalid or unable to be verified. I left it alone until I got my learner's  permit/state ID (AL) as I saw you could verify your SSN online with a DL or ID. But even with that now, the online verification comes back with "no records match the information".

I called SSA yesterday to ask if they knew anything, they said everything looks good on their side and said I could try going to a post office to verify in person. You need to start this process online, still, to generate a barcode, but I can't get the barcode because it says there's no record of me and my info. I went to the post office today to ask, but they said they need the barcode. So I'm stuck in a loop!

Has anyone experienced this? Know what could be causing it? Is it because my DL is a learners permit (that also says FN on it, which hubby says means foreign). I've also read somewhere that having no credit score/record can cause a problem. So would getting a cc in my own name solve this? Just feel like I'm going to encounter the same issue with them not being able to verify me. I'd also note that our residential address differs from our mailing address, but I've tried both addresses and a combination of them and still no joy.

Honestly no idea what to do at this point. We aren't able to comingle much of anything because of this, the most we have is a shared credit card (I have my own card, but it's not a joint account because of this).

Are you saying when you try to login to the SSA webpage, it does not find a match for your SSN and name?

I can't log in to use online services without going through one of two verification methods. Either ID.me or Login.gov (names might be slightly wrong, but they are the only 2 options to log in). I am able to log in and see a dashboard, but can't do anything there without verifying myself with a valid ID through one of those two sites. I have tired this with both to no avail.

But my issue isn't with gaining access to SSA online services. My issue is that I can't gain access to everything else needed here like bank account, credit, etc without my SSN being validated. And I can't validate it because it says there's no record to match my info, whether that's on SSA site, ID.me, Login.gov, banks, credit, etc. They all say invalid, but I camt validate because there's no record match. Do you see the vicious cycle I'm in lol?

Why a post office to verify SS card?

A trip to local SS office should suffice /calling seems useless

Because SSA says nothing is wrong to them. The info they tell me on the phone is the same as if I was sat at their desk. It's the same computer screen. SSA have told me that they do not "verify" SSNs. When they are generated for a person, they are automatically valid. The verification is requested by third parties for basically every service here. Banks, credit, insurance, etc. This is not an issue with SSA as I have double checked my name, both maiden and married, address, phone number, etc.

The post office is just a verification option, as well as doing it online. But even to verify in person, you need to put in your info online, and when I do it says there's no match.

I'm a bit confused...

So when my husband came here we got him his SSN before we married, there was nothing that needed to be verified. I added him to my bank account. He got his own phone plan and added me to it. I added him to my health insurance. I had no credit accounts to speak of, so by the time he was working he was the one getting his first secured credit card and adding *me*. No one, not the bank and certainly not the credit card company ever requested us to verify anything. You have an SSN it's yours and is a valid number. If a credit card company or a bank doesn't want to accept your business, go elsewhere. When we had issues with Chase giving us the runaround and demanding to physically see his SSN we told them to take a hike and got our visa elsewhere.

@yuna628 Agree.

When my wife tried to open an American retirement account, she needed to print and mail her application with a copy of her social security card.  No big deal, the account took a few days to open instead of a few minutes doing it online (we could have also showed her card in the branch in an hour or so but mail is more convenient and there was no rush).

Wherever you are having trouble establishing an account, you should show them your physical social security card.  I think you are overcomplicating the issue.

I've never dealt with a "barcode" or visited / called the SSA for anything other than at my father's retirement date (my wife got her social security card in the mail automatically after she immigrated).

Your number is valid once you have your physical card in hand.  The SSA office is correct in that there is no "verification" of them.  Technically it's not even supposed to be used for identity verification (that used to be printed on the cards themselves) so if someone is giving you a hard time about that, I would just look elsewhere.

As far as a joint user on a credit card, I opened one in my dog's name several years ago... obviously he doesn't have a social insurance number (for those wondering, I received $50 for doing so under some funny promotion).  Maybe try doing business at a local establishment versus one of these automated big companies where they use AI chatbots and don't know how to handle real customers (try a local credit union).

>> One of those, I forget which one,  should accept your passport as an ID.  Once you are logged to SSA you can verify if they really have your SSN matched to your correct name and spelling.

If that is the case, it proves your issue is just a matter of establishing a credit history.  That has been discussed before how you can do that, for example, open a secured credit card, joint with Amex, etc..

You can also try some credit reporting apps, like Credit Karma, Experian, etc.. but I don't think that will help since you have no credit reord at this point.
