Wife finally got here appointment for September 3 a couple days ago, after being DQ since March 2024. She came here illegally since the age of 5 and has a clean record. Her 601a waiver was approved in March 2024 after a 3 year wait. Everything is pretty much set to go,her medical appointment is on August 29th and the fingerprints the next day. We are planning to fly out to El Paso and cross the border on the 28th. So I was wondering about couple of questions and hope to get some advice.

• I heard going to El Paso and then crossing the border from there is the way to go, is that true?

• With her being here illegally is it a risk flying to El Paso? We live in Dallas. With how things are right now I’m really nervous she might get detained at the airport and get sent somewhere just to miss her appointment. She has her passport,it’s not expired.

• If flying isn’t the best course to get there what is?

•Hotel recommendations and modes of transportation.

Our lawyer assured us it would be fine to fly but I am kind of paranoid with how things are right now. If anyone on here is willing to share their experience or any  kind of general advice, I  greatly appreciated TIA.

There used to be a web site that speliased in waivers and had a lot of posters going through CDJ, sadly gone. From my recollection most seemed to travel and then cross by land. Flying well ID might be an issue?

Not up to date on Hotels but get one near the Consulate. I assume you have double checked everything and that the overstay is the only issue.

Ah really that sucks to hear. Yea we already booked a hotel that is a five minute walk from the consulate. Yes only the illegal entry is the only issue. Thank you for the advice.

Flying is probably the best option.  Although CBP officers can sometimes hang out around TSA checkpoints, driving would almost certainly pass through one of the interior checkpoints.

How is she going to return to the United States?  Are you planning to stay there until the visa is approved?  What about AP?  Even if she's "approved" it might take time to get the file reviewed and the visa issued.

Make sure you have copies of everything including your travel itinerary.  If you get stopped, you can point out that you're leaving the country anyway.  Try to avoid the term "self deport"...our government is being stupid about that.

She’s going to Ciudad Juarez for her IR-1 interview because people who did not present themselves for inspection can’t adjust status. They have to return to the consulate in their home country and get an immigrant visa and then present themselves for inspection to a CBP officer in order to become LPRs. This is the standard operating procedure, so OP doesn’t need to worry about any of that.

Agreed with this. TSA doesn’t care about enforcing immigration laws, even in the current environment.

Alright thank you very much,I appreciate the advise this process is already nerve racking let alone with no experience flying. This will be our very first airline journey.

It's just like catching a bus, don't sweat it. :)

Make the most of it, enjoy airport services, food, drink, maybe bit of shopping. Turn the journey into a positive for you both, it can help ease nerves prior to interview.
