Question: Filling I-130 but living abroad as a PhD student; please advise

Hi everyone.  I am planning to file I-130 for my mom but I current live in Greece where studying for my PhD.  

I still own my house, have a bank accoount, and use my driver license from USA.  I plan to go back after completion of 

my studies in 2027.

 

Some questions:

  • when i file I-130 should i only put my USA adress and not include my current one in Greece; could this put me in trouble?
  • If I'm truthfull how could this impact my application?
  • if and when everything is approved, should my mom mention that i live in greece durin her interview at the embassy?

You plan for her to move to the US before you move back?

August 7, 2022: Wife filed N-400 Online under 5 year rule.

November 10, 2022: Received "Interview is scheduled" letter.

December 12, 2022:  Received email from Dallas office informing me (spouse) to be there for combo interview.

December 14, 2022: Combo Interview for I-751 and N-400 Conducted.

January 26, 2023: Wife's Oath Ceremony completed at the Plano Event Center, Plano, Texas!!!😁

February 6, 2023: Wife's Passport Application submitted in Dallas, Texas.

March 21, 2023:   Wife's Passport Delivered!!!!

May 15, 2023 (about):  Naturalization Certificate returned from Passport agency!!

 

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Say it takes 2 years you would file next year so she can get her immigrant visa for 2027

I was hoping she could move sooner to be with my sis whom she hasn't seen in a long time.  Then I would join her later ofcourse

Better find another plan.  Petitioner must be there before she enters (or at the same time).  This is a visa which is intended to re-unite the petitioner and beneficiary.  @Boiler is right regarding the timeframe.

Is there a reason you have to petition her and not your sister?

Then all you can do is wait and apply nearer the time, so that you can move back ahead of her - as Boiler said, maybe apply next year and then drag it out a bit so that her visa isn't issued until after you return in 2027.  But keep an eye on processing times, as if they speed up you may prefer to wait until 2026 to apply.

Nope, will not work.   It is a family reunification visa, obviously if you’re not in the U.S., that’s out the window.
