N400 processing is governed by your local office.  As to filing online vs paper, I have not seen any definitive data showing one is demonstrably faster than the other.

 

That being said, online filing is more convenient for most folks and also most likely for USCIS, but make sure you do not submit an online petition around the time your filing window opens if filing during a 90 day period.

Not sure that the process is shorter, but filing online is easy and convenient.  Just answer questions and upload documents. Receive receipt immediately.  Wife was a citizen in slightly more than 5 months after filing.

August 7, 2022: Wife filed N-400 Online under 5 year rule.

November 10, 2022: Received "Interview is scheduled" letter.

December 12, 2022:  Received email from Dallas office informing me (spouse) to be there for combo interview.

December 14, 2022: Combo Interview for I-751 and N-400 Conducted.

January 26, 2023: Wife's Oath Ceremony completed at the Plano Event Center, Plano, Texas!!!😁

February 6, 2023: Wife's Passport Application submitted in Dallas, Texas.

March 21, 2023:   Wife's Passport Delivered!!!!

May 15, 2023 (about):  Naturalization Certificate returned from Passport agency!!

 

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Thanks, as Dashinka said, it goes to the local office, which I did not know. I thought it went to 1 central location. Thats good news because I'm in Idaho and thinking the timeline wont be too long. Thanks for your reply!

My cousins recently completed naturalization through Detroit, filed in late November 2023, oath ceremony with a name change Feb 22, 2024, and Detroit’s posted processing time for the N400 is showing 8 months.  There are a lot of stories of N400’s being processed quite quickly as it seems (I have no direct knowledge) that USCIS is prioritizing these petitions.

That is interesting, I hadn’t seen that new difference and obviously USCIS is trying to drive folks to file online.

yes,  original difference was only to be $10 so this is a big change and well worth filing online when sometimes the mail is so slow and weather dependent

$50 difference for I-130s filed online, too.

I “think” don't quote me but I believe the spouse of a Military person will be prioritized. Thanks for all the info!
