True, it is only a little island. Naturally, people will have to begin leaving.

My neighbor back home, English chap, said it had a lot to do with the terrible weather there.. He also did not appreciate a 4 by 6 foot house, 2 inches from his neighbors house.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Unless the UK stops immigration and tries to manage the number of people it already has, more and more people will look to emigrate. My parents live in central london and house prices just keep rising as demand increases. Wages are not rising in alignment with house prices, and the pressure for social housing and benefits has overwhelmed the system. People are sick and tired of paying tax upon tax upon tax to keep the country going. There is not enough room or money for the numbers now residing in the UK.

Yup, the house prices just keep rising and rising. It is great for people leaving and selling up, but not for the people who have to remain and wish to get onto the property ladder.

The Daily Mail and the Daily Express? Blimey, Gupt, you don't half read some shite newspapers. :P

*nods* These two newspapers are notorious for their scaremongering in the UK. Pinch of salt to be taken with every page.

People have been leaving England for centuries! People relocate around the US for one reason or another from the beginning of our country. Drive around the US and you will see we have vast amounts of wide open space and room to grow for a very long long time. Unemployment is low so we will always attract people from all over the world.

Every great nation has fallen throughout history someday maybe even ours will but it is more likely we will merge into a larger ONE WORLD economy before we ever get to the point of a country invading us and taking over.

You know what, drive around Britain and you'll find lots of wide open space too. Despite the number of Brits leaving, I'd guarantee a similar or larger number of people are moving to Britian right now. I very much doubt the population is shrinking.

The Brits are a global people, go anywhere in the world and you will find Brits living there. We're an ocean nation, its in our blood to travel around the world.

This is somewhat like the analogous debate about Canada.

Many times I have seen mentioned the "brain drain" from Canada (with complaints that the people moving to US have used/abused Canada's education system to get US job); but considerable numbers migrate to Canada under "point" system, so Canada's population isn't shrinking either (some may have plans to immigrate to US using Canada as steppingstone, but that plan is very looooooooooooong-haul).

Similarly, lots migrate to UK from South Asia, Caribbean, Nigeria, ...

Such migration is going to exist so long as the UK (or Canada) is seen to be more prosperous (and/or free) than the country of immigrant's origin.

True that is, but there are less and less tax paying people all the time. And no, I don't just mean illegal immigrants. Many people just can't be assed to get a job, the system will support them. Walk around Runcorn on a weekday when the population should/would be working, most of them are about shopping (I don't get how they can spawn so many kids, and still buy designer clothes??)

The tax payers have had enough, and are abandoning ship

I'm in Middlesex county.

Where in South Jersey do you plan a move to? I was looking at homes in the Barnegat area, good value but the commute to this area would be hell. Same thing for the Lehigh Valley.

We are thinking more south than Barnegat. My father in law owns a condo off exit 44 in Galloway, NJ. (close to Atlantic city) It's a nice, quiet area that is slowly developing. PLUS it is affordable! The commute for you from Barn. to north jersey would be absolute ###### though.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

thetreble - on the topic of NJ real estate, check this out - interesting analysis of the central jersey RE market right now. Apparently, locations that are commutable to NYC are the only places that are holding value.

It's all about the nj transit.

Denver has changed dramatically in the 12+ yrs i've been here thats for sure. not as bad as the NYC/NJ area by any stretch of the imagination, but still rediculously high.

average house cost here in Denver keeps climbing to over $220K now. first time buyers of course now with the sub-prime issues find it harder to get loans at decent rates. Startin to shift back to where one needs 10%-20% down.

Denver is not bad at all compared to the rest of the country. Salaries are pretty good and you can get a decen house for $250K or less compared to what you can get in Florida, California and even back East. And it keeps getting better with housing prices going down after they went up the roof about 6-7 years ago.
