Hello,

My wife didn't file taxes for the past 3 years since she's a student and unemployed. We're having difficulties with IRS on retrieving a verification of non-filing letter.

Is a written, signed and dated explanation enough?

Thank you

The solution is to simply check the box near where the information about past tax returns is entered.  It's how you indicate you did not file because your income was below the filing threshold all three years.  That's sufficient, but you could also hand write, "Student, no income."

marking as student as said above,  u can include the IRS letter for non filing taxes

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/transcript-types-and-ways-to-order-them

  • Verification of Non-filing Letter - states that the IRS has no record of a processed Form 1040-series tax return as of the date of the request. It doesn't indicate whether you are required to file a return for that year. This letter is available after June 15 for the current tax year or anytime for the prior three tax years using Get Transcript Online or Form 4506-T. Use Form 4506-T if you need a letter for older tax years.

You can, but it is not necessary in this situation.
