My wife is a US citizen and she wants to apply for her mother to get a green card, and her mother is outside the US.  Can anyone tell me approximately how long it will take from the time of submitting an application, until she is able to come to the US?

Also, once she arrives in the US, how long will it be until she receives her EAD or her green card?  She will need to work as soon as possible after arriving.

Thanks for your replies!

Where does the mother reside?  Once arriving in the US via an IR-5 visa, she could start work immediately.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

About 2 years, give or take.

All right, Thanks Carmel 34.

From what I read it sounds like first USCIS processes your application, then it is transferred to the local Embassy (State Dept?) to interview the candidate.  Then they give you a number?  And then the person can go to the United States.

Is that about right?

No.  That is not correct.

1.  I-130 is processed by USCIS. (can take a year)

2.  I-130 is sent to NVC.

3.  NVC requests documents and fees

4.  After document qualified, NVC sends case to consulate in home country. (after case is at front of the line)

5.  Consulate interviews applicant.

6.  Consulate issues visa

7.  Visa holder travels to US.

The entire process can take 2 years.

Not really, you've missed quite a bit. Not sure what you're reading, but this is your best source for a step by step guide to the process - https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-1-submit-a-petition.html
