In the mess of everything going on with my dad, my dog had been acting strangely. My husband thought he was just a bit depressed about dad not being around again, or a UTI. The strangeness turned into not sleeping for many nights, obsessing over drinking water, and having accidents. I couldn't pin all of his symptoms down but two nights ago I believed his behavior was actually pain based. He's an odd little dog... he might make you think his leg is broken for a stubbed toe or a trimmed nail but the real stuff... the big stuff, his stoicism wall would never let you know. But yesterday morning I could tell he was in pain, so I got him to the vet.

None of the tests ran were very promising at first or pointing to a clue, but there were numbers that looked very wrong. Then they came in with the x-ray.

A mass in his stomach.

And then we were given those impossible choices. An astronomical bill and a dangerous surgery or let him go. This little guy has lived 12 years or more... in a terrible early life situation and has quirks because of it, but he also became a loving little guy that learned not all humans are bad, and we have cared for diligently even through his signs of "old dog syndrome" and his blindness. If the mass were cancer it might be for nothing anyway. I mean what else could it be? This dog literally doesn't like to put anything in his mouth if he doesn't have to unless it's chicken. The vet said you'd be surprised the stuff they've removed, but I didn't think it was possible.

I looked at the bill and looked at my husband. We just weren't ready to give up on him. This dog had always been a fighter. We knew our vet was one of the best surgeons around so we said "get it out". They said they'd do it right away.

And you know this dog and fighting spirit? Well there he was, yowling and being angry in the back as they are trying to get an IV, and flustering one tech that's always acting scared of the job. So for twenty precious minutes I got a little extra time with him before the surgery - because there's nothing that calms him down more than momma's lap, so they brought him in to me, got that IV in, wrapped him in blankets, and I rocked him to sleep. The little guy was snoring when they took him away.

An hour long surgery where he stopped breathing on the table (oh my heart!). Once again they saved his life and brought him around. The tech came in and brought the contents of the stomach.

Guys... the mass? A giant ball of hair and thick wooly cotton!

It wasn't cancer! I could barely register the relief. I was shaking and sobbing one moment and then bewildered at the next. HOW. DID. THAT. GET. IN. THERE?

I've thought about this all night. We have no idea what it is or how or why he swallowed it.

The consequences of him doing so were severe though. Perforated stomach. Infection.... (labs did not indicate this!) bleeding, leaking bile, swollen angry stomach, damaged organs. There was so much pressure build-up in his stomach it really hurt him. You name it... this dog has got it. I cannot imagine the pain he's been through without really revealing it.

After surgery, they wrapped him in heated blankets and brought him to me. They told me he would be critical for days now, so this might still be the last time. He hadn't a clue what was going on, honking and heaving like a duck, snoring the next, wailing in pain and confusion. And then it was time for me to go.

He's such an idiot guys but he's so precious.

Hug your pets today and tell them you love them. Every day they live and breathe is a blessing from God.

He stopped playing with those kind of toys once he started going blind long ago in favor of something smelly like Elk antlers. Only toy I can recall was a Santa head he ripped off a rope toy but no stuffing or anything came out. This is a thick wool, almost like one of those woolen laundry balls or something made out of alpaca but we don't use those. For peace of mind I spent the morning searching through all the xmas ornaments - all the potential culprits were intact. Typically for him to put something in his mouth he has to be very attracted to the smell... I had thought tampons, but it doesn't look quite right.

OMG that poor baby. I'm glad you took the chance and it is not cancer. Hopefully he continues to do well and has a some more good years left in him.

Thrilling Thursday-on-Friday report, see man:

Breakfast/lunch for Mini-B. was a "meat-lover's breakfast bowl," ingest wee man.

Breakfast/lunch for us was Mama T-B.'s remaining donated salad, ingest we man.

Decided to visit Mama T-B. at noon, visit Two Guys senior she man man.

Mama T-B. wanted "only a brief visit," immobile/pained senior she man.

Visit lasted nearly 2 hours, little projects added up man.

Din-din was weenies + beans, ingest Two Guys man.

We then ran another errand for Mama T-B., errant we man.

Half-hour job took over an hour, complications man.

We think that the attention made Mama T-B. feel better, decent sacrifice man.

But we didn't even have time to call Uncle T-B., let alone visit man.

Movie night was 2 more Breaking Bad episodes, watch Two Guys man.

Many (2+2) bowls of Costco popcorn were consumed, ingest Two Guys man.

This tallies to Many (2x2x2x2) bowls for the week, highly approvable man.

Began rolling/traying our silk ties for impending donation, delay but finally doing it we man.

We had Many (2x2x2x2x2 + 2x2x2x2 +2) -- si man, Many (2x2x2x2x2 + 2x2x2x2 +2) -- just in the brown family, :girlwerewolf2xn:  :bonk:  man.

We have far more than that in the blue/gray/purple/green families, :girlwerewolf2xn: man.

We kept just Many (2+2+1) in the brown family, donate nearly Many (2+1) Manyzens of those we man.

We aren't going to be able to fit the eventual number of trays in the T-B.-mobile, conclude we man.  :girlwerewolf2xn:

We have itineraried 2 highly proximal ESs for Friday, ridiculously proximal man.

Neither appears appealing, presumably furniture & art only man.

Nevertheless, we must keep our streak alive, streak we man.

No party with the rubias tonight, no cavort we man.

Uncle T-B.'s CD matures on Friday, begin cash-out/reinvestment process we man.

And that was/is our thrilling Thursday, report we man.

So last night the Hillbilly sprung on me two things he wants to do this summer. He wants to go to Six flags or Cedar point and he wants to go to the ocean. I'm all for swimming in the ocean. Since I've never been. So now I need to figure out where to go. Plus figure out who is going to watch the dogs. One thing he never thinks about. At most it would probably only be a weekend trip and would be driving.
