Passport mail forwarding

Does anyone know if passports can be forwarded in the mail? I applied at the start of April (no expedite) and will be moving at the end of June. I plan to change my address with USPS a few weeks before the move. Just a bit worried since there's a chance my passport and certificate won't make it to my current address in time.

Any chance you can move addresses after receiving the passport and certificate of naturalization? If you never receive them, you effectively have no proof of your citizenship. That's a big deal.

Technically yes, though depending on the timing of the receipt I may have to pay another month of rent and not vacate. Didn't plan on moving so soon, otherwise I would have expedited.

Ouch. You are in a precarious situation. This is the downside of the current naturalization + passport process versus staying an LPR.

 

1. Do you have an unrestricted so social security card?

 

2. How many years are left on your state ID / DL?

 

3. As a result of your move, will you be required to update / replace your state ID / DL with your new address?

 

4. Does your current state, or if applicable, new state, grant ID / DL to people unable to provide evidence of authorized presence?

1. Yes, my SSN card doesn't have any restriction wording on it.

 

2. I renewed my DL with the certificate of naturalization so it's good for 8 years.

 

3. Yes, I'll have to update my DL with my new address. I can do this without proof of citizenship.

 

4. I don't think so - as a LPR I wasn't able to get a DL until the green card was received.

Looks like you can take the risk. You have 8 years to replace your passport and naturalization certificate if USPS fails to forward it.

You can also contact US Passport Agency and update your mailing address now…I would recommend using a trusted friend / family member: Mr Citizen c/o Mr Best Friend.

 

This will give you time to check back with them in a couple of weeks and make sure address updated.

Thank you for sharing this. I found this exact snippet last night and called them this morning. They emailed me instructions and another email address to send my address change information. Let's hope that works!

Following up on this thread - the mail forwarding worked. I received my passport last week and got my naturalization certificate back this week, all mailed to the new address. Took 12 weeks overall. Glad to be done for real!! 🤩

To clarify, is it just the USPS mail forwarding, or did you notify the passport agency of the new address directly? Or both

It sure is!

 

I notified the passport agency two weeks after they received my application. We were purchasing a house at the time so I gave them my in-laws' address where it ended up. We did USPS mail forwarding in June, though it didn't affect my passport.

Gotcha. Yeah, having bought a house recently too, you definitely don't want to delay that just because of getting a passport! Glad it worked out

Following up on this thread.
Does address change/mail forwarding to USPS office also work?
That is, I applied for passport at a Passport Office in Post Office in my town, and State Dept. received application on 06/05/2023. But then I had to move temporarily while the passport application was processing. Because I don't have a relative nearby I forwarded all my mails to rental box via USPS.
In addition, on 06/19/2023 I also did a change of address with State Department by calling 1-877-487-2778 as follows:
To: CA-PPT-HQCallCenter@state.gov
1. Applicant's Name (First, Middle, Last): My name
2. Relationship of Person Submitting Form (Self or Minor Child): SELF
3. Locator Number (If Known):00000000 (known)

Question:
How can I confirm address change with State Department system?
Can State Department forward passport to USPS PASSPORT OFFICE in my town's USPS office?
