Newbie - Applying for US Citizenship

Hello all,

I am a newbie here and recently stumbled on this site.

I am looking for some help. What do I need to do to prepare for US Citizenship application? I have been married to my living US citizen spouse for more than 5 years. I have been a permanent green card holder for 8 years. We have a 1 year old son together and live/own the same house.

I appreciate your help. Looking to see what kind of checklist everyone has put together that helped them become succesful in their application process, and some tips on how to put together the application "packet".

Thank you in advance and looking forward to your responses.

Since you have GC for 5+ years, you should apply N-400 standalone, not tying to marriage. Should be a simple app online, just need to pay attention to Yes/No questions on moral character, tax records for the last 5 years, travel history for the last 5 years. any citations, arrest records and everything else need to collected.

Good luck

Thank you for the response. I am so new to this.
It has been so long since I had to deal with USCIS (LOL) since I got my permanent green card years ago.

Is this the N400? I'm in very initial stage right now and doing a lot of reading/research so please everyone, forgive me if my questions sound silly.

Is this where I apply? Apply for Citizenship | USCIS

Can someone share their checklist of documents that they've prepared?
TIA!

Checklist for n400 is among the smallest in all USCIS applications.

  • N400 itself
  • G-28, if bringing a lawyer in (Lawyer will complete it and attach all the documents)
  • Marriage / Divorce certificate
  • Front and back of your GC
  • Paid citations (if any)
  • Recommended  : Current on your child support / alimony (if any)
  • Naturalization cert of your USC spouse (if applying under 3 year rule)

Don't think I am missing anything else.

Might need addresses for the last 5 years

Not might, definitely will. And not just addresses, employment and unemployment, citations (if any) too.

The paper form itself requires it, online doesn't let you go further without filling it. If one doesn't fill it, expect RFE or denial.

Yes and you will find it pretty painless as you do not have to add a bunch of “ongoing marriage” proof.  Just answer the questions, scan and file the attachments, and after that you just wait.
