This guy actually made it a point to advise that "tips" are appropriate for the service....Huh? Is this normal protocol?

Yeah, I'm calling BS on this one. This tipping thing has really gotten rediculous too. I will NOT tip Starbucks either!

If I'm going to tip Starbucks, then why not McDonalds? Heck, why not tip the teller at the bank for accurately giving me cash back? It's nonsense. My wife works as a stylist at Fantastic Sams. More frequently than you would think, she will perform a 2 to 3 hour highlight or perm service and the customer will give her a $3 tip- while praising her work and recommending her friends. Bear in mind that at Fantastic Sams she works hourly- not on a 60/40 split.

So, everytime I get a cup of coffee that took the guy behind the counter all of 93 seconds to make, I think of my wife who works a minimum of 20 minutes on someone for a two dollar tip. What goes around comes around!!

What about bartenders?

Depends on how strong they make the drinks. Seriously though tipping the bartender is really self-preservation. I do that to make sure they don't ignore me on the second round. You know how hard it is to get attention at a bar in L.A!

I was bringing them up as an example though...they can pour you a drink or open up a bottle of beer in a matter of seconds, so I don't think tipping should be based on how much time they take. Tipping should be about service...if you like the service then tip...if not then don't tip. :) I couldn't see myself tipping at a place like McDonald's but I've seen tip jars in ice cream shops as well as sandwich shops, where they really can customize the order.

Nicole makes up for my stenginess though. She thinks of it as Karma or something. If she tips the Starbucks dude then she thinks her customers will tip her better. It's funny. In Vietnam she allowed me to tip the waiter at a rate of about 3% (like 25 cents), but here she tips one dollar for 3 dollar cup of coffee.

I like her way of thinking. ;) ...although a dollar tip for a $3 drink is a bit high.

When I get take out and charge it I purposely put a line through the tip section so that they don't write one in. No way would I ever tip for that.

Pizza delivery I give $3 to $4 tip.

Haircut I give about $5 and $15 to $20 if it's a color job since I normally get foils which takes some time.

Restaurant always 20%

I don't take cabs that often, maybe once a year if that but they normally get $2. Don't know if that's low or not.

Maids I give $5/day at a hotel.

Bag people (don't know what you call the guys that take your bags at hotels and airports) I give $2.

I'm sure I've missed some but that's all I can think of for now. When I used to drink I'd tip the bartender about $1 to $2 depending on the drink.

At the Applebee's where I work we have Carside To-Go service but still a lot of people come inside to place their to go orders. As someone who has worked in to go before, let me just bring a few points to your attention:

-Oftentimes the to go people are paid only slightly higher than a server (in my restaurant us servers are paid $3/hr, hosts, bartenders, and to go are paid $4/hr) which is still below minimum wage.

-The main tasks that a server does for you (take your order, get you a drink, grab your already plated food from the kitchen and bring it out to you) are the exact same things that to go people do, except to go also has to package it, provide condiments and silverware, bag it, etc.

-If you sit down at a restaurant, you still had to get out of your car and walk inside-I'm not sure how that's a deciding factor.

-In general, people are becoming less and less appreciative of personal services being provided for them. I pride myself in following the strict service guidelines that I was trained in by Applebee's as far as time limits for the various service steps, suggestive selling, friendliness to the customers, anticipating needs, etc. and still I find myself frequently being tipped less than 15%, many times less than even 10%. That's particularly upsetting when you just ran your ### of for that table. In my case, I'm there to make tips. I already make a paycheck at my full time job-I wanted some cash in my pocket. It sucks to work all day long and leave with $40. Please keep in mind we (servers) are not all stupid, lazy, uneducated, and lower than you and have some common decency and TIP WELL! k thanks!

Don't let the sunshine spoil your rain...just stand up and COMPLAIN!

I was at a Luau in Hawai'i where the barmen actually put some more rum in your Mai Tai if you tipped him. They did it every time, you could see the confused look on some of the foriegners when they didn't get "the extra". ;)

Well you did ask them to bring the food to you instead of driving there and getting it yourself, so yea you should have tipped him. He didnt ask to bring you food, you asked them to bring you food.

i see nothing wrong with tipping if requesting food being deliverred to me. if i dont want to tip, ill drive to the place and bring the food home myself.

Oh and i used to work my tail off in a coffee house. And when i made 10 espresso drinks for a customer yea, i think i deserved that tip. Not only did i have to take orders BARKED at me on every little difference in sugar and milk and whatever else from customers who are already rude as he11, its not like its an easy job. im not saying its a hard job either. but i bet if any of you who said you wouldnt tip had to get behind a counter and deal with customers like yourselves, the feeling would change. some of you may already been there, but i doubt alot have. That tip is alot to someone who is working, not on welfare and is overjoyed by that measly 1 DOLLAR tip you might leave in the tip jar.

a few weeks ago I wrote on the receipt a $3.00 tip and left $5 on the table for a $30 ticket well somehow my credit card was charged 37 something instead of 30. I was like grrrrrrrrrrr. We go there all the time and never had a problem so I didn't say anything but if it were to happen again I would be so pissed

I waited tables for years. Tipping for takeout is *absolutely* optional. I would get a tip for a takeout order from time to time and it was, of course, appreciated. Yes, it does still require preparation, and when the restaurant is very busy, it's certainly an inconvenience to prepare a takeout order when you could be devoting that time to the potential tippers at your tables. But there are lots of things that servers have to do that aren't directly related to their own tables - side work, running duties.

That said, I am a very generous tipper when I go out to eat, but I have never given anything for a takeout order.
