Bee and I definitely tip when we're in a hotel - I sure feel sorry for the person that has to clean up after us! :P (Actually, we're neat people, but cleaning up after someone's bathroom is still a pretty ick job.)

The difference between tipping at takeout and tipping at Starbucks (or any kind of coffee shop place), at least to me, is that I find the experience with the Starbucks people more similar to a sit-down dinner at a restaurant. I'm not saying that I would tip them every time, but occasionally I'll find someone that has given me good service and I'll drop them a coin tip in their jar.

Nini - Vancouver BC, Canada (she's the one who does the forum thing)

Bee - Devon PA, USA (he's the one who gave her the shiny ring)

It pisses me off when you go to a donut shop or Starbucks and they have that cup by the register that says "Tips"............next you'll see the "Tips" cup at 7-11's............FFS..............do your job.

Well, I worked in a coffee shop all through graduate school. We were paid less than minimum wage and split our tips at the end of a shift. But we worked our a$$es off. We were (if I do say so myself) friendly and very efficient and by the second or third time a customer came in we knew what drink they wanted and could have it ready when they came to the counter. I usually worked the 6 am to 11 am shift, so we had a lot of business people and regulars. People tipped us well for our service. But, we provided the service because it was our job, and certainly appreciated the tips.

I do tip when I go to a coffee shop if the service has been good/friendly/efficient, etc. I know how hard it is to do the job. It's not as easy as it may look, especially when you have some a$$hat saying "half decaf, low fat, some foam, extra hot, two pumps of hazelnut-sugar free, in two cups" exceedingly fast and then they get annoyed if you ask them to repeat it (or you repeat it) so that you get the order correct.

What were we talking about?

Oh yeah, take out...no tip.

To give tip is ok. But I wouldn't give tip, only because this person asked for it (It is his job, so probably his salary is not up to tips). This is not nice part, because tip is not expected and required in bill, but your choice.

So tonight, my pregnant sweetheart was craving some famous Kansas City beef barbecue ribs.

Of course I obliged, by phoning in an order to "Jack Stack", one of many good ones here.

When I arrived for the order, the cashier/attendant presented the bill, for which I supplied a CC for payment.

I simply signed it, ignoring the "tip" line, as I was not actually served, in the official sense.

This guy actually made it a point to advise that "tips" are appropriate for the service....Huh? Is this normal protocol?

We usually cook Indonesian food at home, but sometimes opt for restaurants with table service on occasion. Take out orders are very rare.

So, does anyone have experience with this? Did we drop the ball?

Typically the Take person is the "low person on the totem pole". They make the same wage as the servers, so think about this. This same person may very well be your next server, so treat them well.

We usually tip a dollar or two for take out

Thanks for the advice folks!!!

In this case, I arrived at the "take out" counter. One must get out of the car and go inside. The order and bill are presented at the counter. This is where my confusion set in, when the attendant talked about a tip.

As an aside, the food was outstanding.

Really, William, no tip was necessary. You didn't "drop the ball"...don't worry

No tip is required when making take out orders. However, sometimes I do tip the waiters / hosts at restuarants that I frequent and/or waiters / hosts that "I feel" are nice, geniune, and helpful. It all boils down to personal preference because there is no pressure to do anything more when it comes to take out orders.

That's my five cents. Can someone please give me my change.

Cheers!!!

Hmm ... can't say I've ever thought to tip for take-out from a pizza/chicken/whatever place where I called in an order and picked it up myself. Sit down service = yes Delivery = yes Coffee Shop = yes

Wouldn't hesitate to say "keep the change" if the take-out person offered extra service, condiments or was especially nice though. I do that sometimes in fast food eateries. *shrug*

Other than that - taxi drivers and hotel maids. Can't think of anyone else I've ever tipped but I've also never gone on holidays to resorts where excessive tipping is common.

Here's a tip ... don't go out in the rain without an umbrella. I remember my dad actually used that line in a restaurant once. I wanted to crawl under the table and die.

I draw caricatures for a living and some days I get mad tips while other days I never get any at all. It is of course always nice to get that tip, but I've never given it any thought thought as to whether my profession should be considered tipable as say a waiter/waitress job. And I never get angry or disappointed when I don't receive a tip.

Any thoughts as to whether my services should or should not be tipped? I wont take offense if you think it should not. I love my job, tips or not. :):):)

HAHAHA well maybe a little bit of an #######. That comes with the job. Cracking jokes as you draw the people in front of you. Usually the more you make fun of them ,I have found, the better the tips. HAHA

I was recently working part-time at (rhyme's with Willy's...'I want my baby-back, baby-back, baby-back) where we had a server working the take out station. They still have a bit to do with taking the order and making sure the food came out correct, etc. I'm with John & Annie on this, a small tip of a dollar or two is appropriate.

Yeah, I'm calling BS on this one. This tipping thing has really gotten rediculous too. I will NOT tip Starbucks either!

If I'm going to tip Starbucks, then why not McDonalds? Heck, why not tip the teller at the bank for accurately giving me cash back? It's nonsense. My wife works as a stylist at Fantastic Sams. More frequently than you would think, she will perform a 2 to 3 hour highlight or perm service and the customer will give her a $3 tip- while praising her work and recommending her friends. Bear in mind that at Fantastic Sams she works hourly- not on a 60/40 split.

So, everytime I get a cup of coffee that took the guy behind the counter all of 93 seconds to make, I think of my wife who works a minimum of 20 minutes on someone for a two dollar tip. What goes around comes around!!
