So tonight, my pregnant sweetheart was craving some famous Kansas City beef barbecue ribs.

Of course I obliged, by phoning in an order to "Jack Stack", one of many good ones here.

When I arrived for the order, the cashier/attendant presented the bill, for which I supplied a CC for payment.

I simply signed it, ignoring the "tip" line, as I was not actually served, in the official sense.

This guy actually made it a point to advise that "tips" are appropriate for the service....Huh? Is this normal protocol?

We usually cook Indonesian food at home, but sometimes opt for restaurants with table service on occasion. Take out orders are very rare.

So, does anyone have experience with this? Did we drop the ball?

Depends on the kind of take-out restaurant. If you pick-up at a full service restaurant where the food is delivered to your car, I suppose a modest tip may be called for. If it's a plain take-out food place where you walk up to the counter to self-serve, then I don't think a tip is called for.

i agree... all they did was package the food... they arent having to refill your drinks or clean up your dishes, etc... you are already paying for the product they are providing... there is not a service being provided that requires a tip... i think its tacky for someone to ask for a tip for simply doing what they are already being paid for

If you call in an order, drive to the restaurant, go inside and pick-up the food; then no tip should be expected. I think it was rude for them to mention the tip.

However, if you go there a lot, and the people are nice, and you get to know them; a tip would be nice and would probably get you better service on subsequent visits such as your order being ready faster, fresher food, extra goodies, etc., or maybe just a friendly smile.

If it’s one of those take-out places where you go and pick it up and you call them when you are in the parking lot and they bring it out to your car; a small tip would be a good idea.

Thanks for the advice folks!!!

In this case, I arrived at the "take out" counter. One must get out of the car and go inside. The order and bill are presented at the counter. This is where my confusion set in, when the attendant talked about a tip.

As an aside, the food was outstanding.

I don't understand why they would expect or even encourage tips.

By the way, I didn't know yall were expecting. Congrats!!!!!

Thanks Miss V, We really appreciate it.

As an aside, it was briefly mentioned in the never ending "Avatar" thread.

While on the "Avatar" topic, regarding Matt, is he already deployed?

i don't think you dropped the ball. i usually round it up a buck or two for pizza delivery but that's them bringing it to me. in this case, them taking it out to your car after you drove there and them expecting a tip is hilarious.

In fact, I actually went inside the restaurant for the "take out" order, that is why I left no tip.

No tip required in this situation.

Sorry for this side note about tipping...

Every holiday season something comes out about who you should tip and how much you should tip. If I had to tip every person on this "list" I would be broke until next Christmas.

I definitely agree. Delivery = tip. Eating at a restaurant = tip. Picking up takeout from their counter = no tip.

It's so tacky when someone mentions that they want a tip, or a bigger one even - that happened once at a restaurant. -_-

I agree, I would not tip in this situation, and it was rude to ask.

I'll tip at a drive-in where they bring food to my car.

I'll tip more if they're on skates, 'cause I sure can't do that.

Congratulations on your pregnancy (F)
