If you wanna learn morality and ethics, you should know personalities like Hitler and Gandhi - live examples from real history about ethics and amorality in science. These so called modern things usually should be things what your parents tough you - eat healthy, calculate what you can afford etc, simply life things. Well, its 21 century, seems then I am old school.

There are and long have been plenty of 18 year olds here in the US that wouldn't know.

Mention the airlift around here and you get a lot of blank stares.

That's pretty unbelievable since it's part of the standard curriculum, at least in this state. They actually taught history in my school. And science. And math. I don't know these idiot Americans everyone keeps bringing up as examples.

Actually, here, at least in north, in PA, I see that people are not dummy as in typical stereotypes about standard American.

But even they are not dummies, they are very naive and easily to believe anything you say.

As I am foreign, people had big interest about me and they ask things. So they ask me - What you cook, and I made joke and said - snakes! And they totally seriously ask me - and how do you rip skin off.

And of course - some still live in cold war feeling. Even its more then 20 years!!! is over, they assume, that all the rest of Europe (maybe is not big countries as Germany, France or UK), all is ex communists and speak Russian. Grrr. But the sad part - they don't want to believe me sometimes, they live in their own build clue about things, and very confident about their only true, and no way to change.

of course this makes perfect sense - the holocaust was so long ago now that it doesnt really matter that kids dont know about it, and MLK and Churchill were only a couple of guys who did a few good things years ago. Yes I agree lets forget everything and teach our kids healthy eating instead. After all, it will take 6 years of education to work out that 4 donuts a day will increase your weight.

You mean to tell me that your average American high school grad can tell me something about the Airlift? I actually know very few Americans of any age that would know what that was. Maybe I've been hanging with the wrong crowds...

As for the Berlin Wall. Well, let's just say that I've met enough Americans that didn't exactly know where to find Germany on the map to begin with. And most are pretty stunned when they learn that the Berlin Wall enclosed all of West Berlin rather than just separated East Berlin from West Berlin. They're equally stunned when they learn that West Berlin was an island - so to speak - in the middle of East Germany. Which plays along perfectly with the complete ignorance about the Airlift.
