I am in the middle of my I-751 and wanting to apply for Citizenship. But I have a little dilemma... my British passport is still in my maiden name. Does this have any impact on the application? I was looking to update my passport but with Covid the wait time is longer and I may get called for my interview at any point... it’s suck a risk. Does anyone have any insight or advice? I’ve never been stopped with my green card having my married name and passport maiden so far. (Touch wood) I am wanting to change it but Covid just simply delayed everything! Any advice would be helpful! Thanks 😊

It would be very unusual to have a Removing Conditions interview. Passports are supposedly only taking 4 weeks.

Are you renewing or just changing the name?  If you are renewing and delay, and get a US passport first, they won’t let you do the online application and upload photos. It’s because of having dual citizenships I was told by the passport office.

I just need to change my name. So I should just send my passport off and then apply once my passport is back in my hands? I’m in no rush to get citizenship- my window opens next month. If I have my passport with me in my married name, I should be fine to apply online?

thanks for responding!

Not relevant.

Can you clarify what is not relevant?

Thanks!

Online application and upload photos for what?

Having your British passport in your maiden name is not relevant to your application for citizenship. Wasn’t that your question?

Yes but I had read somewhere if you have different names on your passports( UK & US) it could get funky! But if it’s not that big of deal I won’t worry so much. Just don’t want to mess anything up. But thanks for you input!! :)

you need to apply for citizenship before you worry about a US passport lol. You’ve presumably changed your name already anyway if your married name is on your green card. So seems to me any “funkiness” is to do with needing to update it for the British passport for British purposes and nothing at all to do with the US process, yes?

To get a British passport. It’s not as streamlined if you hold a US passport as well. Paper application and printed passport photos mailed to London, etc.I didn’t know how long she planned to delay and if she would have her US passport before she got around to changing her name in the British passport.

You can use the online (British) passport application, which they say is faster processing than paper. You still have to mail the current passport to London.  It’s up to you to pick when you do it because you don’t have to have it for your US immigration processes.

Ok, that whole post had confused me because it hadn’t even been asked and you didn’t specify what was being applied for online ...she asked about naturalizing... the name on the British passport is not relevant for naturalization.

Yes I was also confused.

But regardless of any of that! Thank you for stating it is not really necessary to have my passport with me. It also will take some time for all of this. I will send my passport off and start the process for the N400. I will photocopy any stamped pages and upload! Thanks again.

I will start collecting evidence for my N400 and get my UK passport updated also! I’ll also try to expedite it so there is no confusion. Once I have my passport back in my hands I’ll apply for the N400. I just needed to figure out if my UK passport was a huge part of the N400 application. Thank you for your input! It was very helpful
