Hi! so my interview was finally scheduled for mid april after first applying in june last year.

I live in Belfast, although the interview is in London as expected.

The only problem is my passport is the only photo ID I have, as such I didn't realise they ship your passport back to you with the visa inside.

I need to fly back to Belfast.

Any ideas?

Can't you get a state id or something? Or a secondary passport and leave the first one at the embassy?

Not possible in the UK. There is no state ID and getting a second passport is not that simple in the UK - it used to be a available to everyone but not anymore.

OP, which airline are you traveling with? BA don’t require a passport for domestic travel. Photo ID is only recommended, not required, for domestic travel. Do you have a picture ID card issued by your employer?

The alternative is to take your passport with you back home for the flight and then courier it back to the embassy for the visa.

If you can’t fly with any other ID, then you tell them at the interview you need your passport to fly home. Upon arrival home, you send the passport back to London via the courier. They will complete your visa process and send it back to you by courier. This used to happen years ago when passports were the only acceptable way to fly back to NI and Scotland, but I haven’t heard it mentioned on here in probably eight or more years.
On the embassy website....

For security reasons, all documents should be submitted via the approved courier service.  If you have been asked to submit your passport or any additional documents, you should log on to your account via https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-gb and print off a Courier-in Receipt

Check with your airline to see if they will accept a certified copy of your passport for travel. If the embassy keeps your passport you can request a certified copy of it (literally a black and white photo copy of you passport with the embassy seal stamped, consulate officer initials and stamp that's says "certified copy"). They kept my fiances passport at the London embassy but he still needed to get his medical at knightsbridge and they required a passport. This is exactly what we did; the embassy even sent via email from the IVunit. It was acceptable for that but again check with the airline and explain the situation to them in detail. Good luck on this and your interview ; cheers!
