Hi! Can someone familiar with Mexican marriage certificates explain to me the difference between the two certificates I received. One is a long form, that we signed and fingerprinted at the ceremony, with our witnesses names and signatures also. The other is a certified copy that has the bride and grooms names, ages, and nationalities only.

1. Are they both legal documents? Can the certified copy be used for official purposes, with translation and apostille?

2. I can only get copies of the "certified copies", right?

3. Why is the certified copy not an exact replica of the longer one?

Found love, thought I wanted this path, two years later realized my partner was not worth all the stress 😁

The one with fingerprints is original, don't give that up to anyone, you only get one.

You'd use the certified copies for legal purposes.

For immigration purposes you don't need an apostile, I got one anyone just in case we need it for the future.

Also get extra copies while in Mexico, it's a bigger pain later and more expensive if you need to pay someone to do it for you.

Thank you so much for your answers! On the certified copy, there is not a stamp though. Is that standard? There's a signature but its very basic looking.

ours has a small circular stamp on the bottom right, not embossed.

It's on special paper not a photocopy

Oh interesting, we dont have a stamp at all. It has a QR code, a barcode, and a signature but no stamp. Thats why I was concerned.

did you get yours digitally?

If you have the QR code I think you are fine because they can scan that to verify it, I believe that's something new.

Someone got their police certificate like that.

No we got 3 certified printed copies from the wedding planner. It does have a QR code but when I try to scan it, it doesnt let me look at the link. lol.

I think you're ok, it's an electronic signature, they started doing this because of covid closures

Thank you!! Ok, so I am good to go with the certified copy then. I did have it translated to English before submitting to USCIS. So that original that I have, I don't need to make copies or give that to anyone at all right?

bring the original certified copy with you to the interview in case they want to see it.

The one with the finger print you shouldn't need.

BTW you could have done the translation yourself, you just need to send a note saying you are fluent in both languages and sign it.

We got married in Cancun too! It was lovely and the resort was able to do all the work for us which we really appreciated. I am currently waiting for the apostille as I need it to get a Russian visa to go see my husband,. Hope it doesnt take tooooo long!!

We didn't user a resort, we had a friend that had gotten married in cancun and put us in touch with their planner, we went straight to the civil office and they had the apostile to us in a week which was unusually fast, every where I saw said it can take 2 months.

Hopefully it's fast for you too.

Hi guys,

Can I join the conversation as we're planning on getting married in Mexico also :D

Just a question in general.. when you got married in Mexico, and if your family name changes, what do I need to do when I come back to the US?

Why/For what purpose do we need the apostille?
(and will we know what to do to get it and certified copies?)

We got in touch with the civil registry and they gave me a contact of a judge. We're planning on getting married without a planner/resourt.

Sorry to jump into your conversation... but I'd appreciate your help.

Thanks so much!
