If you've recently sent in the big pile of AoS paperwork (I-485 etc.) and things fall apart while you are waiting to hear from UCIS, how do you go about cancelling your AoS request?

Putting a Stop Payment on the fee check seems like a good first step, but if they are just going to use the info on the check for an electronic funds transfer, then that may not work?

Not showing up for the interview would, I assume, end things but that's months away.

It seems like there must be someone to email or contact to more cleanly and quickly abort the process.

I suppose anyone who has actually had to do this isn't going to be reading these forums, but I thought I would ask while I sift through Google and wait for the USCIS cust service center to open.

Take the money from the bank account and don't allow overdraft. The package is going to be rejected and you save the money.

You can try to email the lockbox but it always take weeks for them to respond.

I would immediately stop payment on the check, then mail a letter to USCIS stating that you want to withdraw.  That should do it.

Sorry that the marriage doesn't seem to be working out.

Others have already given excellent advice on how to stop the process.

This is a highly personal decision and only you can determine what's best for you. Please be aware that, once you stop payment or contact USCIS to stop the process, and if you decide differently in the future, it may be difficult to "restart" the process. Be 100% sure that aborting the process is what you want to do.

It would be rather annoying if they held this against us since the reason for the trouble is the slowness of the process and the rules against travel while waiting on this incredibly slow process. My wife's folks live in an area that has been hit hard by the pandemic and my she can no longer stand to sit here in the U.S. - living unemployed and  in isolation - while her family needs her back home. If it were ok to travel back and forth, or if it didn't take months and months for permission to work or travel, then we wouldn't need to abandon the AoS in the first place. Anyway, if our relationship survives the combined stress of the pandemic and the USCIS immigration process, maybe well try for a IR1 visa or something in a couple of years.

Thanks for the help all.
