USCIS live chat

I did a live chat today to check on service center and I asked if background checks have been done and was told they can't legally tell me that?? 

I'm pretty sure i read on VJ others receiving that information? 

I could be mistaken but im sure i read that. 

What information CAN they say?

you can call FBI and they will tell you what you want. USCIS cant tell you that
