Moving to the US - Health Insurance?

Hi all,

I am moving to the US soon (2 days!) and looking into health insurance for the very short period (about 5 weeks) before I can go on my husband's plan.

Does anyone have any recommendations of which companies to use for this which are reasonable (I am a very healthy person in general!) and just for basic cover (emergencies and what not). Also, any recommendations of which companies to avoid?

So far I have looked into a few quotes and Cigna seems good ($276 for their "Silver" package) - has anyone had experience on them?

Thanks in advance!

CIGNA is a major insurance provider. Not some hole in the wall outfit. 😁

Cigna has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with 426 total complaints on file in the past three years. ... Only in Maryland did the company earn a four rating.

That sounds like a good plan until you are on your husband's plan.  In all cases, just be aware of the plan exclusions and deductibles. ....good luck.

If you are already married ( You said Husband) why would you not be added to his plan already. I was able to add my wife to my plan less than an hour after the ceremony with a phone call. They added her conditionally until I could send in the marriage certificate a few days later. But, other than that, Cigna is a huge insurance company, and probably a top rated one also. You may not even need the silver plan. I think they offer a bronze plan that would only cost you 150 dollars. Since you are in good health, you are only looking for like you said " Coverage for big emergencies" Heart attack, appendicitis, things you don't expect to happen. Save a little more money and just get the bronze.

Here on a K1? Need married and a Certificate in hand within a few hours? I'm here to help. Come to Vegas and I'll marry you Vegas style!!   Visa Journey members are always FREE for my services. I know the costs involved in this whole game of immigration, and if I can save you some money I will!

I think this would often be the case, but my husband was made redundant in July, but got to keep his health insurance for a year as part of the severance package. While he found another job right away, it has been contract until now and he gets a permanent contract starting in Jan. So then he can add me! All a bit complicated. And thanks for the heads up - I will research their bronze plan! $150 is much more palatable

Health insurance is a state thing, not federal, so make sure your plan is for your specific location. You will pay Premiums  based on your age and smoker/non-smoker not any health conditions you may or may not have.

You will also pay for doctor visits out of pocket until you reach your deductible, which may not happen in just 5 weeks unless something catastrophic happens. Then it will pay a percentage after your deductible is met. How much deductible on the plans you have viewed.
