Obviously I am not booking a venue but I have gotten my dress. We were thinking of having a courthouse wedding and a reception right after when he gets here. Is this common place?

 

i would love to hear about anybody’s experience that has done this if possible. 😊

It's certainly possible and quite common to have a courthouse wedding within a few days of  arrival on a K-1 (we got our marriage license the day after POE and got married two days after that ... and picked up my parents at the airport the morning before the civil ceremony).

 

Putting together a reception might be a bit more complicated, though that depends how elaborate you want to make things and how long you expect to wait between your fiancé getting his visa and his arrival. Something put together by just you and your friends and family and hosted at someone's home has a lot more flexibility than something catered at a rented venue.

Courthouse K1 weddings are very common, so are small boutique weddings. My wedding, while not at a courthouse, was small and under 20 people and we planned the whole thing before he arrived. But planning something like that is not usually recommended, I would not recommend it to anyone personally, and while everything went off that day fairly smoothly we had plenty of hiccups along the way. It requires you to be upfront with vendors and find individuals and companies willing to work with you on such an unusual and fluid timeline.
