There is no activity today and I found this article on CNN today and found it rather amusing/ignorant. Any ideas from anyone else? Don't we live in America, the melting pot?!

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/04/navarrette/index.html

It is just another example of the small-minded Americans (not all of us). During the last election, politicians and the media used the gay marriage issue to distract us from the real problems going on in this country. This election they are using immigration. Unfortunately, the dumb ones will fall for it again.

You're dead on, Steph!!! ...Damn shame though  ...'Land of the Free' and some people are afraid to think for themselves

Gill

It really is a shame. "Land of the Free" is a loose term nowadays. Don't get me wrong, we are still better off then many, but we are a far cry from what we were. What is forgotten is that we are all immigrants of some form or another. I am not sure why this political generation feel entitled to shut the country doors now. Who do they think they are? Not that I want to go on a rant here....

:)

I think the primary point of Navarette's article was that people fear that immigrants will change the current culture. It is true today and it was true over 200 years ago. He quoted Benjamin Franklin and others who said things that were just as narrow minded, bigotted and anti immigrant as what is being said today.

Despite the fact that this country was built by immigrants and our culture is stronger and more vibrant because of their influence, human nature does not evolve much over the years. We still fear change and are reluctant to welcome large groups of people who are "not like us".

I think you are all missing the point. Back in the hey day of immigration, immigrants came to this country to make it their new home. To embrace the "American dream" to its fullest and to build lives, familys, and homes here. The illegal aliens (they are NOT immigrants) who are comming to the country now are not here to embrace the American dream. They do not make their homes here, their homes are elsewhere along with their families, which, coincidentally is where most of their money goes. To call the people who take advantage of the system like this immigrants is a slap in the face to every person who immigrated to this country or immigrates to this country legally. Just MHO, and YMMV.

I am obviously not against immigration, I enthusiastically endorse it, for the people who want to come here and embrace a new way of life. When we visit our significant others countries, we do not go to their country and impose our culture on them. People who come here illegally, are many times imposing their culture on us. How many of your significant others speak a language other than english? Did any of them refuse to learn english when they come here? My guess is probably not, because they want to embrace a new life and a new culture. I am not seeing much of that behavior from the illegal population.

Who is imposing their culture? Are they forcing you to watch Telemundo or something?

I think what she means is that illegals come here and expect, nay, demand that you speak their language (often spanish) and don't bother learning English, or doing anything to really 'better' themselves while being here. (Which should be a tall order since they're here illegally anyway).

Our loved ones coming here legally...my assumption is all of them are more than willing to learn English and the "American Way" to live here, and that's the way it should be.

"demand" you speak their language? That's a new one, I find that funny. It's amazing how us as Americans can't adjust to foreigners, when in fact the rest of the world pleases us. I mean everywhere I go theres English speaking people, not to mention they also make signs in foreign countries that are in English.

Pace Skyrockets :dancing: But Some Pre July Petitions Forgotten? :(

Here are the new VSC summary stats that reflect approvals dated through December 1st.

The projected number of processing days is based upon the number of open petitions divided by number of petitions approved per day for the various periods. As the approval rate changes, the projected processing time will change also. Perhaps dramatically. Please do not take the projections too seriously. However, projections may be useful in determining if your plans are realistic given the current rate of approvals.

Suggestions as to how to make the Summary Stat Report better are welcome.

I have something that I would like to see in your report :D Would it be possible to add another column in the VJ petition completion % metric that shows what the percentages were from the last report? I would like to compare the current % from last weeks % and with all the traffic that this thread gets, it takes me forever to find your previous report to compare. If it is difficult for you, just tell me to get off of my lazy butt

I must say that I am heartened by the great pace but it is mighty dispiriting at the same time. Like you, I have not had any touches lately and, no doubt, my file lies with yours at the bottom of some guy's filing drawer next to a rotting apple and a copy of Maxim.

To all of you who have been recently approved - a hearty congratulations! Hopefully, we will have our time to dance too soon.

I must say, I wish I had taken part with all of you earlier. The support here is amazing. Unfortunately, I cannot write to the forums at work due to company policy but it sure is great to keep up with the daily developments and victories.

Times are tough for Sara and I but it is heartening to know that there are others of you who understand what we are feeling and stand with us whether or not you have already been approved.

Congratulations faith!! Feeling a little better today? Have you laid to rest the jealousy monster?? :girlwerewolf2xn: Hahahaha   Well, its very very good news! You know, I never thought they just skipped over your file or lost your file. Sure, VSC has issues with inconsistency, but to be honest I think you guys simply required extra background checks. Well, either way it's all behind you now....    Time to dance!!!! Good luck on the rest of your journey! :D
