Canadian Citizenship for U.S-Born Child

I have no idea if this is the place to ask this question, or if it even belongs in this forum at all, but I am hoping someone is able to help me!

Background:  My husband and I were both born in Canada and are still Canadian Citizens.  My husband is also a Naturalized U.S Citizen, and I'm a U.S Permanent Resident.  We reside in the U.S.

We recently adopted our son (who was born in the U.S) and officially have his new birth certificate that shows my husband and I as his parents, with his new name.

My question is - is our son automatically a Canadian citizen because both his parents (my husband and I) are Canadian citizens?  Or - how do we go about obtaining our son's Canadian citizenship so that he will hold both Canadian and U.S citizenship?  Is there an application to fill out, etc. ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

As this is a US immigration website it’s unlikely that you will get much help on the topic of Canadian citizenship ...😓

Organizer hat on .. I’ll move your thread to the Canadian regional forum .. maybe some help

there.

It is looking like it might be the same process as for bio kids. Your son will not be able to pass on citizenship to their children with the newish changes.

Follow the link posted above and check it out. I hope I read it right.

After that you would apply by filling out and mailing to Canada the forms.

Hi! Just wanted to pop in and let you know that I did this for all of my kids, and it's actually fairly simple!

You'll need to apply for a Canadian citizenship certificate. Your son is allowed to gain citizenship based on you, but you still have to apply for it. You fill out the application, pay the fee online (I think about $75.00?), get the appropriate photos taken (note the size is not the same as US!), documentation copies, etc. and send all of that together back to Canada. Eventually you'll get a letter in the mail stating the received it. With a couple of our kids I got the certificate in the mail within a few months, for my last baby it's been taking forever, they were slow initially, and now the virus has really slowed it down.

My kids love telling their friends that they are American AND Canadian like Mommy :)
