I was dreading the day when I have to get added onto Jamals insurance. As a brand new driver (got my license 2 days ago), never driven before I came to the states and not being married yet, I was scared just how much the insurance would be for me! i was getting stupid quotes like $800+ every 6 mnths. But we called USAA today and they added me on, full coverage for just $45 a month!! Sometimes I hate the military, but especially during this whole visa process, the benifits have been really good and I'm glad that we've done it while Jamals been in the airforce.

Is USAA a veteran only insurer? I've had All State for years but I'm paying over $600/month with no accidents or tickets on the record.

Yes, you have to be in the military or have been in the miltiary to get insurance through USAA. To get rates that high, what are you driving? or do you mean $600 over 6 months?

not true. you may also join usaa based on your parent's military service.

We have USAA for car and home insurance!! They were much cheaper for car insurance than State farm, BUT a bit more expensive for home insurance,BUT they are much better to deal with, and don't have to worry about being dropped!!

you might also try armed forces insurance. they have similar requirements for membership. i switched to afi for 2 years on my house insurance for two years when usaa jacked up my rates - saved $650 a year.

hubby has been with USAA for years,...I got my credit card with them, in December 05, with no USA credit history. Started off with $500 unsecured, they quickly increased that to $1300, then $3000. And few days ago, it went up again to $4500. I dont work at the moment, only pay the card with hubbys income. Love, love , love these guys,..customer service is awesome, and we have good household goods insurance rates. We didnt do car insurance with them, only casue our current car is a hootie, and too old to insure with USAA....lol

Doh! My bad there. I mean $600 for 6 months. My dad was in the Air Force for a few years so maybe I can check into them for my car insurance.

We're screwed for homeowners insurance. I live in an area that is only insured by the 'Citizens' group. I really hope someone gets into office and forces these insurance companies to write homeowners policies in FL or get out of the state all together. They made a fortune for years and years then when they had a major setback (hurricane) they dropped policies left and right. Oh, and my homeowners insurance is now 3x what it was in 2004 with a higher deductible that includes a 'hurricane deductible' of 2%. :ranting:

Or even a grandfather works!!! For us to get it, my wifes parents had to have it as well, then we were able to get it!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
