How did you ship your things from UK to US?

Hi all 🙂

This is all quickly starting to become so real! I'm moving out in May on the K1 (approved in jan), and am thinking now about how to get my stuff across. I don't have tonnes of things... around 3 or 4 large suitcases worth. I was thinking of shipping some to make fly day easier...

I have found a company called MyBaggage, who are quoting £100ish for a suitcase, 3 day delivery! Has anyone used them? Or have you used a different company that you recommend?

Thanks!

When I enquired with British Airways about shipping 10+ large storage boxes of stuff they recommended their unaccompanied bags service to me.  From my address in the UK to my parents' address in the states it worked out to be about £140 per box and it takes 7-15 days (by air; it's cheaper by sea, but takes longer).  I haven't used it though, so can't speak as to the quality of service.

How heavy are your cases? If you want your stuff asap and it really is only a few suitcase and they're not more than 23kg, you could consider checking them as excess baggage when you fly.  With British Airways it's about £120 per extra suitcase if you pay online when you book (it's £140 if you pay at the counter). If they weigh more than 23kg and less than 32kg then there's an additional £65 fee per bag.

Thanks for the info! It's super helpful 🙂 I will be sure to check out the service!

What did you do with your stuff? Or have you not moved yet?

We haven't moved yet.  We're IR-1, both living in the UK and still waiting for approval of our I-130.  We hope to be there by the end of the year though, so do keep us updated with what you decide to do and how it works out!

I used a removal company for my stuff as I had boxes and furniture, but if you've just got a few suitcases I'd probably just pay for excess baggage.

I used Send My Bag. Around £100ish for a 30kg suitcase and took 3-4 days. I've used them a few times and always been happy with them.
