Hi guys,

My husband (Australian) and I (USC) both live abroad, and we didn't tell my parents when we got married, so I'd like to not have our correspondence sent to their house. Can I just use one of the forwarding services (e.g. ShopMate) as my I-130 mailing address or is that going to be considered sketchy?

Thanks friends ❤️

It's a mailing address, so it's OK.  You're not coming from a high fraud country, so I don't see it as sketchy. Some might consider leaving your parents out of the loop to be highly sketchy but STILL it's Australia, not Ghana, or Morocco.

Thanks! I also realised I can just use our Aussie address for our mailing address too, just had a brain blank moment, so hopefully that will suffice. I'm still not sure when/where to mention that we've deliberately not told anyone (it's all just family politics), but I'm still up in the air about getting an immigration lawyer or using a service like Boundless to help us out anyway.

My spouse (Australian citizen) and I (USC) live in Hong Kong and just received our 2 NOA1 forms in the mail, so while it seemed to take a little bit longer than say an address in the US, they did get here...!  Goodluck!

I don’t think scetchy, when living abroad, in our case it was practicable... we didn’t tell either side because didn’t want the whole gotta get married here/there issue... eloping made it about us, not them 😂

This is not just eloping.  If I understand you correctly, you still haven't told them.

My 2 cents on the the immigration lawyer thought would be to not get one. Ours has only slowed down our process and made things more stressful. My wife's father paid for the expense and the lawyer came highly recommended. I have not come across a single person mentioning how an immigration lawyer has helped their journey on all the different threads. In fact the opposite is the case, and people just mention how hopeless and non communicative theirs has been. However....this is just one person's opinion.

If I could do it over again (even though my wife and I did not personally invest) I would do it all myself and not hire anyone. I have ended up doing most of the work anyway. Websites likes this are a wealth of information, and if you are ever unsure you can always ask. Take the time one evening to scroll through the different threads relevant to starting out the process and I think you will see how much you will learn.

My biggest tip is to just take your time and always triple check everything. Never rush the process. Leaving something a day or two to make sure you have it right, can save you in the long run.

As for Boundless I have no idea.

Best of luck!

im Australian and my husband (USC) are living abroad. We used his parents mailing address in the US as he will be returning there in Jan 2020

I don't think mailing address really matter. We posted our petition i-130 on 14 Oct 19.

We did it ourselves - no lawyer!

Good luck
