Hi, Im applying for citizenship. (finally!:D)

on form N400.

I am a korean citizen and I have served in the korean army(mandatory duty for any korean male citizen)

however I'm not sure how what's the best way to answer the following.

Part 12. question 17.

Were you EVER a part of any group, or did you EVER help any group, unit, or organization that used a weapon against any person, or threatened to do so?

A military unit does use weapons against people..

I can't seem to find an answer to this by googling.

apologies if this is a duplicate question.

so should I answer yes?

Many thanks in advance!

Answer here by my understanding should be no.

Unless it was North Korea.  (Kidding)

At the interview I would suggest you mention this - you did your service as per required and answered this no assuming that the intent of the question was not applicable and that should close the issue.  Many countries require this.

i think this question is more regarding to if you're a thug/gang, who uses weapons against civlians, i'd answer this question "no"

that makes a lot of sense, sometimes, i read things too literally(perhaps mild asd?). thanks! :D

Since it is mandatory and several countries have the same rule, I will say " no"

LOL. Here's the question again. Which part of requires it to be of a mandatory nature before you disclose it? Many people in ISIS or other militias were also mandated to use weapons.

Were you EVER a part of any group, or did you EVER help any group, unit, or organization that used a weapon against any person, or threatened to do so?

Don't over-complicate it. OP should answer the question in the affirmative, then explain the circumstances.

Okay agreed with @Afrocraft, put yes and then explain the mandatory requirement in S. Korea.   It is well documented and he will have no issue to get citizen.

I served in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) and answered Yes to those questions along with an explanation of my service and that Israel has mandatory conscription.

As I am sure you are aware, this answer affects several others, such as 14C, 17 and 19

During my interview the officer and i spoke about these, there only real question was whether I felt I had ever violated the Geneva conventions.

I was naturalized last month with no issues.
