Does waiting for the 2-weeks after arrival before applying for an SSN still apply in 2019? I read one post in this forum that USCIS records get updated instantly. Just want to confirm if anything changed.

Generally it's nearly instant now as it uses electronic records for SAVE.

How did you check her existence int he SAVE database? What benefit did she apply for?

I-94 number and/or passport number. She's K1.

Right, but unless she applied for a benefit (i.e. SSN), there is no case to self-check in SAVE.

I see. She arrived last week. Do you think it's safe for us to go to a Social Security office any time now? I want her to get her SSN as soon as possible.

Should be fine. Once you apply you will be able to see the case in SAVE. If you get a letter saying the card will come in 7-14 days you are good. If you get one saying they need to verify your info it can go around in circles and it caused us to give up after several attempts.

Now it seems to be almost instantly upon entry at POE.   

 

Wasn't that many years ago they were still handing out I-94 .. so some postings on this will be outdated

You don't have access to the SAVE database.

 

If you found your I-94 online and have printed it out odds are the info is in SAVE also

Yeah I was confused about the whole SAVE database thing. The "self-check SAVE" and the "SAVE database" that the SS office has access to are two different things. At first I thought they were the same.

The SSA will perform a check against SAVE. This should then create a case, which the self-check tool can display.

Only limited, authorized entities have access to run a SAVE query / create a case.

That makes sense. I wish that was explained in the SSN Guide. The wording in the guide is quite vague.

 

I was doing the self-check SAVE since she arrived and wondering why she hasn't shown up.  😂😂😂

I went 2 days after arriving and had to go through manual verification. It took about 3 weeks to get my SSN and then it took another 3 weeks to get my name changed after marriage (had to go through manual verification again) When you go to the SSO and they can't find you in the system, make sure that they file form G-845 to verify your status with USCIS. The SSN officer told me USCIS has to respond within 3 weeks and they did. This was August 2018 btw
