Change SSN Name After Marriage?

42 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

So my fiancee' went to the Social security office today to change her name on the SS card and they will not let her until we have the AOS approved they told her?  Is this correct?  According to the K1 flow chart (https://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow) this was suppose to be done before the AOS?  We already submitted our AOS and used her married named, but it isn't changed yet?  Is this a problem?  Please help we don't know what to do.

I did the same thing.. I had a ssn in my single name and after married, I came back there to change my ssn name.. but they won’t let me.. same reason with yours.. luckily that was before we sent our AOS Application.. So I filed for new SSN through AOS or should I say, I checked YES in my EAD Application Form. I received my new SSN the same day I received my EAD and AP NOA2..

So what do I do now that I already submitted the AOS with her named changed?  I'm so confused as I really thought she could get her SSN changed with our marriage certificate.  It makes no sense.

But is the AOS wrong now since we used her new married name and not maiden name?  The flowchart is wrong too and that should be move to the last step then if this is the case.  What a waste of a 2 hour drive and gas and time to get to the SS office for nothing.

Name on ssn needs to match her current immigration paperwork.   Once aos or work permit is approved then the name change on the ssn as well as the restricted language can be removed at the same time

The number is the same for life. It's not an issue for AOS.

If you are still in the first 76 days of entry (90 days - 14 days legal status required) then you can get a new card under the married name. However, even then sometimes SSA staff don't know this. It took my wife and I 3 visits to the SSA to find one who did know to do it.

no you have all the documents to support the name(s) and change. thats not an issue. Once it's approved, then you take that approval to social security with the marriage certificate and they can change it .

i haven't looked at the flow chart, so cant say if its wrong or not, but there are a couple of different ways of obtaining a social security card, and a name change throws a wrench in at least one of those ;)

SO glad men dont (typically) change their names and its not something we have to worry about. changing mine is easy. lol

approved or with EAD as noted above ;)

Agree with you.. My SSN has restriction.. it says valid for work only with DHS Authorization. SSN Staff told me that I’ll come back there once my AOS and I have the green card.. So once I have the green card, I will go there to have them remove the restriction..

The number is the same so it shouldn’t be an issue..

It was in the EAD form that I applied for new SSN.. It asked if I have SSN and I put in my SSN.. There’s a question if I want to give them authority to issue me new SSN and I clicked yes..

OK cool thanks.  So once she is approved for the EAD she can get it changed? No need to wait on the AOS right?

It hasn't even been 60 days yet, but they wouldn't let her change it.  We live over 1 hour from the SS office so its a hassle to go back and forth and for me to keep taking off work.  I guess I can just wait until she has the EAD and then get it changed?

Ok good thats great as I don't want it to be rejected right off the bat. So after about 4-5 months if the EAD is approved I should be able to get it changed right without having to wait on the full AOS?

We chose no on that questions since we already had one.  As we thought we could just back to the office and it get it changed, but we were wrong.

Don’t worry.. your wife will be fine.. yes in the AOS (from K1) we applied for our married name.. but there is also a part in the form they asked for other name used and that will be our maiden name.. so technically, we are kind of applying with both our new and old name in the line.. it’s connected..

Don’t worry.. your wife will be fine.. yes in the AOS (from K1) we applied for our married name.. but there is also a part in the form they asked for other name used and that will be our maiden name.. so technically, we are kind of applying with both our names in the lines.. it’s connected..

Oh ok thanks. I sure hope we did it right. I guess we will see soon.
