Any of you participate in National Novel Writing Month? I've participated several years and even 'won'  a few.

My friends and family love my rants on facebook and other media about this whole process and they have repeatedly told me I should write a book about my experiences. This year I decided to write a humorous guide to immigration. I figured this whole visa journey has enough frustration, heartbreak, euphoria and drama to fill a book. 

 

For you that have no idea what I'm talking about:

Nanowrimo, or, National Novel Writing Month is an annual, intenet-based writing project that prompts participants to write a novel of 50.000 words between November 1 and November 30. Many published and well known authors write peptalks to get people started and to keep them going. There is an online forum where one can find writing prompts, do wordsprints with other writers, commiserate and celebrate each others successes. Have a look at: https://nanowrimo.org

The American Dream; a guide on how not to get shot
A humorous look at the immigration process and all it entails. 

About a year ago my now husband and I started the process to get me to the United States. It is safe to say this has been the most baffling, trying, jaw dropping and at the same time the most fulfilling journey of my life. 

Follow me as I battle to keep my cool through the long months of waiting before getting the visa. Read on with toes curling as I try to apply for a social security card with my three middle names. Laugh and cry with me as I fight the hags at the local BMV to get a drivers license.

So lovely you can find humor in this whole process, lol. I just call it my every-few-years annoyance. And now I guess I won't have to worry about it.

 

Does writing technical reports and journal articles count? If it did, I don't think most people here would be interested in statistical analyses lol

Lol, you made it to citizen? I wish. I was complaining just yesterday how this immigration thing costs more money in printer cartridges than it costs to feed a family.

 

And you can write whatever you want. Some write short stories. Others write screenplays. I've even seen a few people using nano to give writing their thesis a boost.

I will look into NaNoWriMo for my technical writing then. And I agree, the printing of documents was quite a lot.

You can log into the nanowrimo website and update your daily wordcount. 

Shoutouts can be given on the forum when reaching 10,000, 5,000, or even just the daily minimum of 1,667. People are very good at supporting and cheering you on.

To those wondering about the quoted inside joke, the first part refers to a running theme within here:

The second part refers to this dialogue from years ago when I came home one night:

 

Mrs. T-B.:  I bought you cheap.
T-B.:  What did you say?
Mrs. T-B.:  I bought you cheap.
T-B.:  You bought me cheap?  What the dickens does THAT mean?  I'm not that cheap.  And don't let Immigration hear you say that.
Mrs. T-B. [frustrated]: Cheap, CHEAP!  I bought you CHEAP!
Further investigation revealed that she had gone to the store and bought me a bag of potato cheaps.
