I just talked to our wedding photographer and she wants $5000 for the digital images. #######? This was for a 1 hour photo shoot of the wedding only.

No, I didn't choose the photographer. She was selected by the Event Coordinator at the chapel where we got married.

I know I should have checked into this before the wedding, but the Event Coordinator should at least try to select someone who doesn't charge such ridiculus prices.

Just for the digitals? No prints? Heck, I charge $1200 for an all day event, and that includes album or edited videotape (whichever I'm doing). No I'm not a pro, just talented amatuer, but $5000 is a way bit pricey.

Hey Gary! Long time no see!

Hah...that photographer ought be locked away for extortion! That's total BS! There's got to be some kind of consumer protection laws that prevent someone from charging a ridiculous amount for photos. I'd consult an attorney - you may have legal recourse.

Thanks I'll check on that. Florenda tells me not to think about it but I'm really pissed. I know it's my fault for not asking in advance, but I figured how expensive can it be? Well, now I know.

Yes I've been busy, getting married and well ... we have a baby on the way now too. ;)

I'd agree with the above posters..

In Canada (1st marriage) I paid $250 for a FULL day of photos (6hrs), got 6 rolls of film taken, double prints, a wedding album AND the negatives (it was before the era of digital cameras (1999).. eeks.. Times have changed :) I feel old now !

$5000 is way too much.

The event coordinator probably chooses someone he/she is friends with or gets a portion of the photographer's fee. This is often how that works.

I agree that you should have agreed a price beforehand; I doubt you have much if any legal recourse here, unless you signed a contract for a different price.

If it sounds unreasonable, than it probably is. I'm not going to tell you what you should've done. Because I think you already know the answer to this situation. I can tell you that I have worked as a wedding DJ over the past 10 years. My prices are quite higher than most in my region and may seem outrageous to some. But I can certainly prove to potential clients that contacting past clients of mine can justify why my rates are higher. It is not worth it to grab the cheapest vendor in the area. As anything, you do get what you pay for. All I can do is arm potential clients with a lot of information and questions they should ask other DJ's before hiring them. I want them to make very informed decision whether they hire me or not. 8 times out of 10, I end up with the job. ;)

we did that, everyone at the wedding had a disposable or digital camera

wedding photographer wanted $500 for one hour for about a dozen pics (no digital copies), and we paid less than $100 for disposable cameras, developing, regular prints and large prints, plus got about 80 good pics

With me working weddings, from time to time, I see people taking the disposable cameras into the bathroom. You may be wondering why? If you don't know, it's because they're taking pictures of their a$$es. Easy to spot whenever you see people exiting the bathroom laughing like maniacs! :D

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

We had a small ceremony and the photographer was there for about 2 hours. Just 4 people. Anyway, my MIL paid that. We paid the prints and the DVD with the digital images. That was about $600, including 30 prints.

According to my calculations it's due on Christmas day!!! :o

Anyway, what bothers me most about the photographer is this. As a new arrival to the US, Florenda doesn't know how things work here and she relies on me to take care of everything. Of course that will change, but for now that's the way it is. I screwed up big time on this one, and now we won't have a photo CD for the biggest day of our lives.

But we're happy and healthy, and we have a baby on the way, so that's what really matters. :)
